the real reason people don't go to movies anymore

...Some people get it, some don't - I think we've discussed it before and the only one here who understood me was Jarred.
Add myself to that short list of those who get it, if you please.

I admit, I LOVE going to the movies...the smell of the popcorn...the trailers...the whole experience. At least I like the idea of it more these days.

I know now when i go there's a 60-40 chance one or all three of my pet peeves will occur, thus ruining my idealized movie going experience yet again.

John should get a kick out of this... I had to see Titanic in the theatre twice because of the girlies talking and screaming babies. And I still missed 40% of the dialogue.

You said the "T" word. Jesus! Did you forget about the gag order? (after last time)http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=36711&highlight=titanic

"xl7", I wonder if your experience (in Russia) of going out to a movie is not fundamentally different from what's been described in this thread.

I used to love going to the movies. I still go sometimes. But call me old, but while people used to laugh and cry together, people generally didn't always talk back to the screen or "interact" with the actors. The one notable exception was midnight showings of "Rocky Horror Picture Show", where this was expected, and part of the experience.

I wonder if the rise of video games (with their interactivity) had anything to do with this change of attitude?

The last time I saw a movie overseas was in London in the 70s. It was Midnight Express and I seem to remember a lot of people smoking in the theater.

Nowadays, I enjoy the occasional night out at the movies but for the most part I'm just too damned lazy to actually go out and see one. My daughter makes up for it by seeing 2-3 movies a week.

Probably not the interactivity, but the inevitable results of mild attention deficit disorder derived from playing video games too much.

Here's my little collection:

The oldest ticket is the one for Return of the King.
It's certainly not everything I've seen in the past 3 years - probably about 60-70% of the actual tickets I bought since then, not counting the repeat viewings or other people, just 1 per movie - as a lot of tickets usually end up in friends' hands, but lately I've been trying to save 'em as often as I could. Never collected anything, just noticed about an year ago that I had quite a bunch of these and thought it'd be funny to keep them. There is somewhere about 80 tickets in there right now and at least 15 were added in 2006.

I agree. Seeing a movie in the theatre is a communal experience. That can be aprt of the "fun" of it...laughing together, crying together, etc. HOWEVER... when people just chitter chatter, talk on their cell phones, text message their friends sitting 3 rows behind them, or are the ONLY freaking one talking to the screen like their fat buttocks are sitting on their couch is not acceptable. What makes it worse is that in some parts of the country people are afraid to tell said people to shut the f*** up for fear of being shot or jumped when the movie is over and the multiplex theatres really don't have those old time ushers anymore that used to help people find seats, eject talkers-smokers-and just rude people.

Well Hell, I'm afraid to. Did you see on the news how some guy in a theater was sitting behind an old man and his wife at, get this, the triplets of belleville.... The dude kept kicking the old guy's chair, until the guy asked him to stop.

Then the guy started slapping the man in the head and spitting on him. The dude stood up to go, and the other guy got up and kicked the snot out of him and threw him down the steps. He had like a broken jaw, broken ribs and a few other things.

Thankfully the manager found out and followed the guy home and had him arrested.

But wtf.

Totally! WTF exactly. People (some) just don't seem to have respect and get the fact that a movie theate is not their living room.
