Shall i buy washed out colours of the XL2

Hi Im new here and have been researching both the XL2 and DVX102B.

I have been downloading vids from each camera and observing them and so far love the DVX. Every vid I have seen on the DVX has been what Im searching for in color.

The thing is that every single vid I download of the XL2 has a horrible green tinsh to it and washed out coloring, where the DVX is warm and very smooth colors. I also watch this tv station where they use this XL2 and notice the colors are just so washed out.

I am aware of the major advantages of both cameras compared, but really deep down I want the Canon due to the advantages it has over the Pana.

What I write here for is there any way to make that horrid colour problem that the XL2 has, I dont want to have to fix it in post. If I download a preset manager for the XL2 are there presets that correct the problem of this XL2? It would be cool if it could match the DVX colors then I would run off and purchase the XL2 without hesatation.

Thanks for any advise, I plan on making my mind up this week

Hi Hamahona

My email address is moogoo@netscape.com. Contact me and I will send you a short AVI (63k) from an XL2, using only the cinegama and no other changes in the set up, where the colors are rich, warm, and vibrant. I don't know if the reason your getting an odd appearance is because of your monitor or the way people color correct to simulate " the film look", possibly auto exposes is washing out the colors, I use manual exposure and under expose a notch or two, But if you look at this clip you will be able the buy an XL2 with confidence that it can achieve the look you want.

The XL2 just is not a contender in the market (In my opinion ladies). I can't imagine choosing it over the DVX100

Hey Videomike -

Why not post it for us to see ? Use stickypod.com

The Xl2 loses out due to the totally crappily controlled lens, and no line level input on the mics. But, the footage I've seen of it, is really really nice. It's low light ability is phenonenal for a camera of its class, crisp and clear. That said, I'd take a DVX over it in an instant....In fact, I am going to be doing that as soon as I can. The DVX100b now has one of the most killer features.....UNDERSCAN on the LCD. Yup, a little feature, but man something I've wanted for a while now.

I can't believe this statement. It may not have the instant gratification of the DVX (Canon's conservative look) but it's sharper and better in low light, and all it needs is a little finessing in post. (try bumping to DVCpro50 and cc'ing) Also, you can put a great manual lens on it (which works well with the H1 too) . That "crappy" lens also has OIS that puts the DVX to shame. Really comes in handy for long telephoto shots. It also has presets so you can repeat focus pulls with good accuracy. Plus, you don't get that tell-tale handheld look of the DVX because you can shoot with shoulder support and OIS.

Plenty of mojo to play with I think. Oh yeah, it's native CCD rez is very close to that of the HVX...and it's 16x9.

How is that not contending? Is a camera only good for its out of the box look?

From what I can tell about this site mainly is it's bias towards the DVX, for obvious reasons. There is nothing about the DVX that would make me hands down go for it. I have an XL2 and the last few shoots I've done, have gotten great footage. Generally when you see DVX footage on here, it's been through post already, usually Magic Bullet. As far as the "greenish tint" you are saying you see, that's not straight out of the box. Whoever shot what you saw either didn't white balance properly, had bad lighting, or just wanted that look. Same thing for the saturation of the colors. As far as my opinion goes, the DVX is great for someone who doesn't want to spend a lot of time finessing the camera, where the XL2 requires that you work with it, but once you know it, you can fly through it in no time.

Honestly, it comes down to lighting. It doesn't matter what camera you get, DVX, XL2, or even a CineAlta, bad lighting will make anything look horrid.

This site is not biased. Bias indicates that we inhibit impartial judgment or prejudice our opinion.

Don't confuse the fact that we (dvxuser.com) use and support the tool. If it seems biased to you it is due to the large amount of DVX100 / HVX users.

I'll stick to my guns on this one; the XL2 is missing the MOJO the DVX100 has inherently built in. Don't know what it is exactly; but something.

I always hear people say 'I own the XL2' and yadda yadda but never get any examples of the work. I have seen a few examples over the last year or so that does show the XL2 in a nice light but:

Between the DVX100 anbd XL2 I am going DVX100 anyday, anytime. No comparison. In today's market ? It's either the DVX100 or High-Def isn't it ?

-

That my opinion; I'll stick to it but don't scream bias or fanboy because of it. You'll get the 180 degree spin at 'Canonuser.com'.

I find it insulting that we are constantly bombarded with these accusations of lacking judgment on topics because our subjective viewpoints prefer one tool over another.

If hamahona (The thread starter) ran over to FX1user.com and asked the question 'HVX or FX1 ?' and they said 'FX1 of course' would this make them biased or would that simply be their choice and opinion?

Like Elton's rant, whether or not the bullet points are fact or fiction it sounds like for him these are important traights of the XL2; that's great. I'm happy you chose the right camera for you Elton but I ain't hiring that camera out.

Hudson.... you are the salt of the earth.

As for the XL2 DVX thing....

DUDE.... DVX it. Mojo is unstopable.

I wasn't saying biased in a bad way. I was just saying that of course you guys are going to naturally lean towards the DVX because you own one and use it. I don't own or use a DVX so that's why I like my XL2.

As far as the XL2 missing something. That just doesn't cut it as a factor against the XL2.

I've posted a few samples of my work, but not much mainly due to the fact I'm doing better stuff than before now, which is still on tapes because we aren't finished.

I still can't understand why you would say that you would "go with the DVX anyday, anytime" when they are essentially the same technology. I haven't seen anything from the DVX that I couldn't do on the XL2, and I know vice versa.

And I think you are wrong about the market. It's mainly DVX because it's so saturated with them. Everyone here that has a DVX usually drools when I have the XL2 around. As far as HD, I'm staying out of that one for certain reasons.

I didn't even know that there was a Canonuser.com, I was actually kind of dissapointed by the fact that XL2user is forwarded to this site.

Like I said, it's all lighting, I could care less which camera anyone goes with. I'm only saying that I'm happy with the XL2 and it's doing everything for me.

LOL :cheesy:

Sorry. :undecided

All I meant to imply (repetetive) is that at sonyuser, canonuser, jvcuser etc....

The consenus is going to change with each forum. It's not a bad thing. If I say the XL2 lacked resolution over the DVX then I am biased and seeing through the Rose Colored goggles but if I say 'The DVX has some magic mojo in the image that I really dig' then I'm just saying 'I prefer...'

Horse kick done.!

WE drool be cause we are still camera nerds first.... DVX users Second.

 True. I was at South by Southwest this year for the trade show and almost had to be dragged out because I was allowed to play with a f900.

And for the record, I'll never say the XL2 is better than the DVX. Cameras are cameras.

Hi John Hudson

Would like to oblige you John, but don't know how to send a post. If you email me a will attach a clip to my reply. Also some grab frames. I have a preference to work in 16x9 , IMHO the XL2 does this better then the DVX100. It's just my preference. I don't want to get on a platform and start the whole which is better thing for the thousandth time

How's that a rant? It's a serious response with solid REASONS why someone might choose the XL2, not mojo.

Hey, I own a DVX and still like it alot, but I like what the XL's bring to the table even better. Just a personal preference.

I think that "something" is mostly the more pumped, saturated colors of the DVX. The cinegamma's are nice, no question, but there's a lot more to consider than that IMHO.
