PAL HVX200. How do we edit in FCP?

Steve,

The universal FCP update is scheduled to ship this month. Should be everything we would need for both NTSC and Pal. For 199 upgrade you get DVDsp, Motion, and Soundtrack pro all thrown in for pretty much free.. as it's now the production bundle.

Not a bad deal.. but hurry up Apple.

The question should be 'how do we edit with anything?'

I know Avid already edits DVCProHD and DVCPro50 25p because I've seen PAL Varicam footage edited, but how is it with the MXF wrapper?

There is unfortunately no PAL varicam.....

It's just that the varicam can shoot at 25fps but it's still 720p60.

This differs from the HVX-200e that should use 25p over 720p50.

Shocked, my illusions shattered Anders. I just assumed it was a PAL camera because it shout 25 frames instead of 24 :)

So definitely no Avid editing until an update then??? :(

Well, actually no one has tried it yet :-)
But I'm 99% sure it won't work. All panasonic PDF's says HVX-200 is 720/50p at 100 mbps, if they were using the 60p codec it would be 720/50p at 83 mbps.

Don't know much about Avid Xpress Pro HD, but Apple has no separate codec for DVCPRO HD 720/50p (but it has separate QT plugins for 1080/60i, 1080/50i and 720/50p)

On the Positive side support for 1080/50i came only a few days after the HDX-400e was announced.

My Universal FCP update has an estimate shipping date of the 30'th....

My editor friends says the same and said he'd put money on Pal HVX footage working with Avid fine.

Sorry a crap deal. Why should I pay a further $200 for an update when they are normally free? Screwing the PAL users of the HVX? I don't want to buy an upgrade. I would just have expected FCP to update the new codec as usual.

Not sure about the other Avid systems, but we got our HVX200 PAL today and attempted to ingest the 720/25pN stuff (and other 720/50p footage) and our Avid Xpress Studio HD just won't see it at all. 1080/25p comes through lovely, but until they release an update we're not able to edit any of the variable frame rate stuff in Avid Xpress Pro HD at all.

OK, I'm confused. I thought FCp dealt with the HVX files fine, and I thought it would be easy for it, seeing as it's just 25p, no pulldown, nothing? Can someone tell me why FCP won't work with the PAL HVX?

The Varicam uses the DVCPRO HD 720/60p codec.

The HVX-200 uses the DVCPRO HD 1080/60i and DVCPRO HD 720/60p codec.

The HDX-400 uses the DVCPRO HD 1080/60i codec.

The HDX-400e the DVCPRO HD 1080/50i codec.

The HVX-200e uses the DVCPRO HD 1080/50i and DVCPRO HD 720/50p codec.

FCP and Avid has 3 DVCPRO HD codecs 1080/60i, 1080/50i and 720/60p.

They both miss the 720/50p codec.

Simply because the only common format between PAL HVX and FCP is 1080 i50.

Even when you shoot Varicam at 720 p25 or HDX 400 at 1080 p25 you'll need to capture at 1080 i50 to edit.

This is all well with the 25k $ +++ AJ 1200 deck, but as there's no deck to do the resampling and conversion for the HVX we are stuck as of today.

If you have the production bundle the upgrade is 49$, not 199$. What sorta sucks is that you probably will need the paid upgrade even if you don't need universal binaries to get further updates on FCP. But all this said, FCP isn't really the culprit here but Pannys codec specifications are.

What we need is not really an upgrade of FCP but a new codec for quicktime. If that was here we could all setup our own sequnce presets @ p25 and go.

So panny: Do something with that codec of yours!

Agh, so even if I get the HVX tomorrow I can't edit my vari-frame-rate stuff in Avid, only the 1080i stuff :(

Dammit, and double dammit! What about DVCPro50 PAL? Is that totally editable in Avid?

I asked Apple ´please´ upgrade FCP. What is your editing station you work with?

It seems all PAL owners of the HVX200 who edit on a mac are up the creek without a paddle at the moment. You are OK in 1080i, but do anything in 720P 25and you can forget it.

So who's fault is it that we can't do anything in prgressive? Apple or Panasonic?

I hope it's Apple, becaue Panasonic Europe and totally rank at everything.

It's the same with us PC owners running Avid too Steve. They should really have these things in place before releasing the camera in my opinion - same as not having P2 cards/store and Firestore in short or no supply.

OH NO!! *faints*

*awakens in a daze* PAL is a big format, the whole of Europe uses it, the majority of the middle east and africa use it. What is going on here.

I honestly do not blame panasonic. 1 frame per second extra I can deal with. And im sure the coders at Apple could easily deal with it too and shuld have done. They must have seen 25P comming.

Im sure they will release an update or something soon. Final cut extreme will surely not be NTSC biast.

Thinking of getting this cam tomorrow. This may hinder my plans slightly, il just have to store my footage till a later date now.

*sobs* :( :crybaby:

Hi Booth, well I purchased the Sony FX1 the day it came out and we had to wait months before being able to edit in FCP. When the HVX NTSC version was released, there was an updte in FCP within a couple of days. I was hoping that FCP would update the same now that the PAL version is in the shops, buut this doesn't seem to be the case.

Don't Apple care about PAL FCP users?

Are Apple trying to loose customers?? No support for the HD100 either???

WTF are they doing??????????? Indie's made FCP mainstream, now it doesn't support the two best Indie cameras.
