From Vegas to AVID?

Xpress Pro can work with DVCProHD footage natively, or you can transcode to DNxHD for editing and finishing.

Xpress Pro CANNOT work with every resolution supported by the HVX at this time. With each point release Avid keeps adding more and more resolutions.

The short answer: Avid works with the HVX a lot better than Vegas does, but FCP is currently the NLE that most "fully" supports the HVX.

Vegas will soon suffice.

Vegas will soon suffice.

It's only a matter of time when Vegas will have the codec for the HVX then we'll see which runs better. Unfortunately Sony and Pany are having a competitor battle over cameras so that doesn't help things along in getting the codec.

Well... not so fast. Canopus has far better HVX integration than FCP does. FCP works wonderfully once you convert the files (as long as you're not doing 1080/30p or 1080/24p) but Canopus doesn't make you convert the files. On a card-by-card basis it's not that big of a deal, but if you go out for a week and shoot fifty cards' worth of stuff and offload to a hard disk throughout, and then get back to your edit suite: Canopus can start editing IMMEDIATELY, whereas FCP would have to start converting and converting and converting...

What you say about Avid and Vegas is true, if only considering Vegas by itself, because Vegas has NO built-in support for the HVX at all.

If you add Raylight to Vegas, things change -- Raylight supports 1080/24PA, Avid doesn't. Raylight supports all modes of 720, and so does Avid. But Avid supports MXF files, Vegas/Raylight needs to convert them like FCP does.

That is true, but it's also only a small part of what's necessary. It's more important to have the MXF support.

You can work around the codec (with Raylight, or even with Edius Broadcast -- you can use Edius files in Vegas if you have both installed on the same system). But without capture support and without MXF support, the codec is only one small piece of the puzzle. And, again, Raylight gives you that codec.

Unfortunatly I don't have the time to waste on Sony and Panny fighting it out. I have to have systems that work. I don't like Macs, I have had too much of a history with them from my programing days locking up, so I'm not really interested in FCP. I've had two semesters on the Avid so I at least know the interface some what, also Avid doesn't get in bickering contests, they make an NLE and they make one of, if not the best. Finally whats sony going to do when red comes out, bicker with them as well, sorry but if your going to be in the NLE market you have to support the industry, not just your brand of camera.

So finally back to the discussion about Avid, will I be able to finish a commercial for a local car dealer with Avid Express or do I need something more?

Thanks again for the info!

Any of the systems mentioned would be capable of finishing a local car spot.

Hell I've cut national spots on my Avid Xpress Pro system.

AMEN.

Yes, of course you can. Are you talking about HVX or DVX? For the HVX you won't have 1080/24p support yet, so stick with 720 if using Avid (or, 1080/60i).

HVX, I'm sure some of the shooting will be DVC 50. I'd really try to talk any one out of interlaced footage, so I'd probably stick with 720 as much as possible. Thanks guys for all your help, didn't mean to hijack the thread.
