UPDATED - High Res and Full Res Versions now available!

Okay, so my program just got an HVX in January, and I went ahead and made my film using loaner cards and a whole lot of string pulling. Here's the trailer I put together, there's a full res version coming soon. I hope you like it, and I'd like to hear what you think. Fighting, chasing, guns, explosions etc. There's a 3 minute cut that I did for a competition and there will be a full 8 minute directors cut at the end of march.

Now that gave me some warm & fuzzies!!!
Panasonic should be helping you promote that.
Excellent camera work. Did you adjust the camera much
or was that grading done in post.
Can't wait to see the finished movie!!
Great work.

Actually my friend, there is no CC on any of that footage. It's all straight out of the camera. Hot, isn't it?

Yes some nice camerawork but the martial artists leave some to be desired. Are they friends or actual martial artists. Sorry if that's harsh, but this is an area I've had quite a bit of practice in and over 10 years of kungfu traiining so far. I'm going to be shooting a few fights and then a feature in the summer. The lead has done a few action vehicles already and I'm going to have some stuff to show off in a couple of weeks.

I'd say a few more fights and fast action cuts and not just reactions and such and it'll be more impactful. I'll put up a link soon... will be at www.kungfuchristmas.com

Footage looks great. However, I agree with Justyn--

THe fights leave a lot to be desired. =P But you do with what you can! The backflip looked cool, though.

Hey cansian, I don't care what they say. Your footage looks good, bodes well for the HVX in high shutter action sequences. Color looks good. Focus looks good. Nice job. Keep up the good work. i have a few technical questions. What format was this shot in? DV50? Some of the sequences look interlaced, especially when 'our hero' is about to jump off of the roof into oblivion (the close up shot). I noticed it was a 16:9 movie in 4:3 window. Maybe it's an encode of an SD downconvert? I am just curious for my own personal knowledge, regardless everything looks awesome. I don't have quicktime pro on this ole laptop, so I can't see how this was encoded for the web.

This is absolutely amazing. I disagree with the others on the Martial Arts. I believe they work for the movie and are a fit for it. It is a personal directing choice how to shoot the martial arts and not the martial artists themselves. Yes, if you had Jet Li to work with, it would be amazing, but since you do not, I thought this worked very well.

WOW! I like the quality of the footage!! Cool scenes! When is the final movie coming out!!?!? I am excited to see it!

And a quick question. How did you have your lighting set up in the opening scene?(where the main character was on the roof)

Sweet! Thanks for all of your comments and advice. Its way cool to get feedback from the board that I have admired for such a long time. Its really nice to finally get to contribute.

Okay, questions questions: Jeremy First
1. It was shot 720p in 24pn. Im still familiarizing myself with the camera so it was the default format, whether that was DVC50 DVCPro or whatever else it shoots. Some fight scenes were shot at 22fps with a 500 shutter, unless there was only enough light for 250 (or no shutter at all). All the slow motion is of course, 60p. Some of the action scenes where I had no extra sound equipment was shot at 24p. (The HVX doesnt capture sound while using variable frame rates (much to my chagrin - but it makes up for itself - SOO HOT.)
2. That interlaced portion is partially due to the downconvert to SD for this trailer, (I just threw it together last second to have something to show you guys) and the fact that the clip is sped up a little. Running up to the edge of a 27 story building is kind of unnerving (I was following on rollerblades(!) - the poor mans dolly), so I think the interlacing is partially an artifact from that, but I could be completely wrong on that one.
3. Yes, its a 16x9 movie in a 4x3 window. Good eye.

1. The full eight minute directors cut is coming out at the end of March-Early April. We are doing some small reshoots and tweaking the audio is a huge way. A lot of our practical sound didnt turn out so hot.
2. As for that lighting set up, we scheduled our shoot for what we hoped would be an overcast day, and totally lucked out. On that roof, I just placed him where the light looked best and ran with it. Boy, how ghetto am I? : )

Yeah, Ill be getting together a 720p version of the trailer for everyone here real soon. How sick will that be? Man, I havent been this excited about a project Ive been working on in a long while.

Just incredible!!! It's from a movie that you're makin' or it's only a trailer to show action sequences?
I've noticed that many lights are burned (very videoish) , did you have a good Dp? Maybe you must use a lot of Nd filters! LOL
Well, action scenes are great, that shot with the table and the guy knockin' some people's head has an incredible camera movement, I really liked how you follow the action!
Just great! The actor playin' the hero I really liked, hope to see the color correction! I'm waitin'!

Thanks for sharing your beautiful work! :)

Looks awesome man!! good work

I didn't believe in your action hero though, he looked like a computer engineer to me.

dunno maybe im being a d*ck but he didn't have the rugged hollywood thing going on, but I guess if someone's gonna compare your work to hollywood you're onto a winner :p

keep it up bro.

Adam.

P.S if that guy ACTUALLY IS tough then please dont tell him I said that.
dont want some dude with a rope f**king my s**t up.

Yeah, in that outdoor fight, we used some heavy ND. And I shot the whole thing. It was a way barebones production. Written and produced in two weeks with a budget of a little less than a hundred dollars with five volunteer crew. I feel we did very well with what we had. : ) And it's not just a trailer. There is a full 8 minute film coming. I am *so* excited.

The song in the trailer is a track by Non-Stop music that they used in the Romeo Must Die Trailer. The track info that I have on that is "Blind Horizon" by "Non-stop Music" on the album "Film Trailer Sampler". I got it free at a festival I participated in. There's some pretty cool stuff on there.

Yeah, there was one shooting day where we couldn't get any cards, so we ran tape. None of it was in the trailer as I planned all my dialogue exchanges on that day. We also had a DVX or two cover us during the other shoot days. One was dedicated to capturing audio and behind the scenes type footage and the other as a second camera.

And Adam, I guess that I won't pass your remark on. : )

You guys did good with what you had. Hell, I've watched it like four times regardless of how I feel about the martial arts. LoL.

Good stuff, dude.
