XL-H1 retimed BMX clip

I just posted a new clip to my iDisk folder. The original footage looked really bad, so I Color Corrected in Final Cut.

I retimed the BMX footage to 60fps in Shake. I still need to adjust the flow smoothness setting; I think the setting is a little to low so the footage has some smearing artificats. I should get better results with cleaner, better focused source footage.

Also I shot at 30F, I want to test 60i and see how shake's optical flow handels interlaced footage. In the past I have had great results with 60i F900 footage retimed in Shake.

let me know what you thank >

Nice footage. You said it was shot at 60p? How would the same footage look done at 24p instead?

I shot the footage at 30F and retimed it by 50% in shake. So i guess it plays back (time scale) like it was shot at 60fps, but the frame rate on the file is 29.97

I will shoot some 24F stuff and time scale by it by .5 and .25. The file frame rate will be 23.976fps.

But first I have a green screen shoot this weekend, I will let you know what I find.

#include,

Nice results...still, they confirm my findings about 1080i-to-720/60p conversions. If you shoot 1080i with normal 1/60th shutter, and then do this conversion in post, the results are smooth, but still look "video-ish". IMHO, if you're shooting 1080i with the intention to do this conversion, shoot with at least a 1/100 shutter, all the way up to 1/250, (1/250 can look nice but a bit steppy) and then after the proper conversions in post, it will have a more elegant "overcrank" feel ala HVX or Varicam.

I'm interested to know what machine you used and how fast the rendering was in Shake. I used Compressor for this trick and the rendering on my G5 dual 2.7 is pretty lethargic...but the results are worth the wait!

Thanks for the footage!!

I shoot the footage at 30F and i'm sure the shutter was slow, but I will to try 60i @ 1/250 next (thanks for the info). The source footage looked really bad, (it was my first time with the camera and I tweaked every custom preset setting ) i had to do a lot of correction in final cut and bringing the levels up brought out a lot of noise.

I think shake and compressor use the same technology to retime (optical flow), but shake has a few options like backward flow and a few settings that determine the number and precession of frames used to track the movement of the pixels. I think its like multi pass that tracks the vectors of each pixel. I'm not sure how to set up compressor, but i'm interested in your findings because I only have access to shake at work.

Also shake's smoothcam is super nice at removing camera jitter and correcting uneven pans.

The mac is a dual 2.5 G5 and the render times in shake are slow.

A while back I had some F900 interlaced footage of a crumbling iceberg that I slowed down to 300 fps (10 precent) and it looked awesome. Shake handled the interlace and retime very nice. I try to find the file and post it later.

Awesome. Would love to see that stuff. PM me and I'll give you my Compressor settings.
The effect worked well, and I think you're right, it does have some of the Shake optical flow stuff, but it sounds like the "multi-pass" thing is a pretty good analogy for the differences.

Now you have me wanting to buy a ridiculously expensive program for a non-VFX amateur. DAMN!!!

Btw, saw the color clip. It's amazing how well the H1 holds up in DVCPRO HD...especially 720p.

Thanks for sharing your clips. That's one of the best things about these forums are the people with experience and footage to share. I look forward to more of your stuff!

#include,

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to see how Shake might convert 1080i into 1080 60p, and then conform to 1080/24p in Cinema Tools (or Shake, as it likely will do this too)

Would love to see if it can come close to the "Discreet" slow -mo shot in Attack of the Clones" that was retimed from F900 (don't know if they shot 1080i) and looked really good. It's the shot of Anakin and Padme walking in front of the lake on Naboo.

I can give you some footage that was shot 1080i w/fast shutter if you need.

lets do it. I'm out of town untill late Sunday night. i'm shooting waterfalls tommorrow. Maybe you could post the footage later and I will get it late sunday early monday.

I might need help on the compressor side. I only used compressor for DVD stuff and I always work form the templetes.

ok man, I'll put up a few clips for you to process. I'll give you the settings I used for conversion to 720p, so you can convert in Compressor for comparison, but I'm just about dead certain Shake will do a better job of 1080p conversion.

Help me understand.. If we want to target 24p as the final frame rate. Should we shoot in 24F or should we shoot in 60i and then deinterlace in Compressor, shake or Magic bullet. Is the reason that we shoot in 60i because FCP can't handel 24F yet or that (in theory) 60i has more resoultion. I also saw where canon can enable the XL-H1 to record in 50i, so if we want to target 24p is it best to set the frame rate to 50i and then convert

Dose recording in i (interlace) mode and then converting give better results then ( f) frame mode ?

What do you guys know about Magic Bullet Suite's deinterlace and deartifact function

I hope you did not mind; but the footage just does not shine on my computer. Is your monitor calibrated ?

I did a quick adjustment and I think this does it more justice

The reason we want to shoot in 1080i is because it literally has 60 1440x540 frames per second...known as interlaced fields. That's a very high temporal sampling to interpolate from. The idea is to either interpolate to 1080 60p and resample down to 24p for an "overcrank" effect, or do the same in 720p from a 720/60p conversion, and probably retain a little more detail that will translate well to that HD spec.

I've found faster shutter speeds help with the "overcrank" effect when converting the footage, whereas normal 1/60 shutter looks like video slow motion when doing this conversion.

I'm not sure Magic Bullet does any better deinterlace than Compressor or Shake, but it does excel at artifact reduction, which can be nice, but softens the material.

Does it make any sense now?
