exporting from PP2.0 as h.264 WASHED OUT

Why does quicktime look like complete ass everytime I export as that. It's always done that for me.

I just shot down by the harbor today and exported it as a .mov

Check this out

you can see the program window on the right and the quicktime on the left.

Anyone know what th deal is?

Does anyone know if this is just with the h.264 codec? maybe I can use mp4 instead or something else...

I'm unable to export using the h.264 codec, but have exported with the mp4 one... and when I compare my QT file with the exact same file rendered out as WMV, the QT is much brighter. (i'm using Vegas Movie Studio btw)

I just didnt' know if my QT was correct and my WMV too dark, or if it was visa-versa.

:( It just seems that Quicktime ( on pc's ) sucks lol. Everyone that has macs can make QT's fine. I guess I just won't be making quicktimes anymore... or at least until they fix the 'issue'

The gamma for Mac and Pcs is different. To compensate, the Macs add a gamma-correction in the coded. This is not a problem with the Codec per-se and can be easily fixed eiether in post, by simply re-calibrating your moniter.

Google around for "monitor calibration" or something of the sort and you will find something usefull. Incase you feel uneasy about having to calibrate your moniter for the video, it might be comforting to know that Photoshop users have been doing this ever-since Photoshop has been used on the Mac, and it has not caused problems, even during prints.

Im a little confused by that. So you're saying that the QT video is fine it's just that it looks washed out on my PC because I don't have the Mac codec and when Mac users view it on their computer it won't look washed out? Is that right? When you say recalibrate your monitor, does that mean, recalibrate the levels etc... so that the video looks normal?

reflex,

would you beable to post your video for Mac people to see if it looks washed out on their QT players? I'd test it on mine, but I don't have the required OS needed to install the lastest Quicktime player on it (which would be needed for the h.264 compression)

I have found that my H264 files exported from Premiere do not look any where near as good as the ones exported using Quicktime pro. I don't know why, I tried to match up the export settings, but they are obviously not the same.

I export an uncompressed files from Premiere, open it in Quicktime pro, and export from there.

Well I seemed to have missed that 2nd post ago about posting the footage... But I will try to do another test. On my machine, if i make a make a gamma adjustment first then make the quicktime. it comes out ok. in PPro 2.0 gamma is set normally at 10. If you bump it to 15 - 18 range, it seems to be ok. Like was said before, I wonder if it will be too dark then on Mac machines.

QT on PC and WMV on Mac

QT on PC and WMV on Mac

I sympathize for you because I experience the same thing with Windows Media files on my Mac. At least Apple makes Quicktime for Windows. It might not be as good as it is on the Mac, but at least it exists.

Microsoft stopped developing the Mac version of their WM Player in 2003! We've been stuck at version 9 for two years now. All us Mac users will soon have to use a third party conversion utility if we want to watch WMV files. Slowly but surely I've been unable to view certain WMV files on the internet and it's only going to get worse.

I think the success of iTunes and the iPod is the culprit for carving the rift between WMV and QT. It's all about the future of online media stores. Both Apple and Microsoft are GIANT companies and could easily make working players/codecs for each other. Unfortunately, they choose to fight and in the end, we all get the shaft.

Realplayer seems to be the only major streaming media company to consistently develop their technology for both operating systems equally.

Quite simply put, because quicktime is ass. It is garbage and always looks like crap.

LOL oh man Angrius, your posts alwasy reflect your screen name :P

BUT, i have to differ there.. the quicktime site with the movie trailers... even the SD trailers and of course the HD ones.. holy ****... They are so clear and crisp and just like BLOW my optical senses away. I dont get how they get them so good. I can't get anywhere NEAR that , even shooting HD and looking at the footage naitivly....

I guess I must just suck.

Also when i export as a quicktime, the audio is HORRIBLE, when i try not to compress it as much it still sounds horrible.. the quicktime site clips look amazing and sound like CD quality ( just about ) and file sizes are too big either

Keep in mind that those aren't coming out of FCP/Avid/PPro/Vegas, etc. They are taking an uncompressed video file, and then using Cleaner/ProCoder, etc. to handle the compression, and tweaking it for "perfection".

There are guys that sit in rooms all day long and just tweak compression settings for movie trailers to get the smallest, best quality they can.

So don't feel too bad... It's just another form of art that takes time to grasp. :)

yeah man, no doubt. I edit the stuff naitively then try to use Premiere's media encoder or sorenson squeeze but it never comes out as nice as theirs... I understand why.

I can confirm about the washed out QuickTime video on windows. I have both a Mac G4 laptop and a pc and this happens only on windows. The wrong gamma is totally inexcusable. They made a *windows* version so they should comply with the windows' requirements and provide at least the ridiculously simple correct gamma -leaving away speed issues etc. If the gamma was correct, the Quicktime player would be boosting mpeg4 and h.264 content creation, because it is a free download for the Win/Mac users (or already included in the os), not requiring expensive royalties from the content creators (to be included) and it would spread out universally between the users of the two OSes. So it makes me wonder, are the Apple's developers morons? Please prove us the opposite!
