Vacation in Virginia Beach grabs

Here are a few grabs of a seagull that visited our balcony. I shot these thru the glass and had to crop out some dirt on the window. I will do a follow up of some whale grabs.

Sorry I couldn't get better shots of the whale. The boat was pitching and the whale was sleeping so he would go down and come back up but never in the same place twice(excuses). Try to enjoy.

I miss Virginia Beach. Used to vacation there a lot. That whale must've have been a really cool thing to see.

Those gull grabs are cool. How'd you get that close? Zoom? telephoto lens? Just that close to them?

I used to live in Hampton in the late sixties and early seventies. We love the area and my sister and her husband still live there.

Actually I got some even closer to the gulls. My wife started buying loaves of bread just for the gulls and they would eat right out of her hand. My settings were pretty standard F6 letterbox maybe both ND filters on -6 pedestal etc. I think the shutter was 1/60th but it could have been 1/48th.

I got some great footage of a guided catfishing trip in Richmond but that whale trip was the neatest thing and put a nice capper on the trip. In order to get the footage of the whale I put the camera on a tripod and ran it almost the entire two and one half hours of the trip. The five foot swells still made it tough. Although it looks calm in the grabs it wasn't. The wind pretty much made the audio garbage and I was extremely lucky to get the footage I got. Most people with cameras couldn't even get a still shot much less a video. I actually got the whale on 11 different occasions with some help from my kids. Fun trip I'll do it again.

I spent 6 years in Hampton when i worked in TV in Norfolk. Yea I miss the beach!!!! You can shoot some really cool sunrises and sunsets down there too.
