Another provision for this would be to use a longer zoom lever. On older movie cameras they used to include zoom levers that were several inches long, rather than just the tiny pin that Panasonic includes. The longer the zoom lever, the larger the effective diameter of the zoom ring, and the smoother (and slower) the zooms you could execute.
