ZOOM R16 looks cool

Just happened across this while looking for other stuff and it looks like a really cool solution.

8 Mic, 16 track mobile studio with sd card recording or usb laptop interface. Can also be used as a control surface in final cut pro. All for less than half the price of a Mackie control surface.

If you've always wanted fcp audio sliders, and need a field recorder that doesn't have to fit on your belt, this could be an ideal solution.

It's been talked about here before.

A couple of the main issues with the unit: Can only record 44.1 in standalone, Phantom power is only available on 2 inputs.

For like $50 you can get one of Korg's NanoKontrol units that will give 36 channels worth of faders, knobs, buttons and transport controls. Sure it's a cheap unit, but it doesn't feel any cheaper than the Zoom's controls.
