Zoom lens for DVX100a

I really miss the fantastic zoom of my old Canon GL-1s and the XL1s's. The DVX100a (or any other camcorder) just doesn't have the zoom that Canon does.

Can anyone suggest any lenses to help enhance the short zoom of the DVX100a?

Re: Zoom lens for DVX100a

Good luck with getting an answer on this. I posted a similar question a few weeks ago and didn't get one response. It seems like the only options are Panasonic's own 1.6x tele or the one from Century Optics, also 1.6x.

I use the Century Optics 2x that I previously had on my Sony DSR-250. It's a 58mm thread but with a step-down ring and full zoom, I can benefit from the full doubling of zoom range. It's great for doing close up work but there is some annoying softening that spans out from the center and gets worse to the edges. This is inherent in the lens because even with the correct threading on the Sony, I was having the same problems.

This softening is not noticeable when you are doing closeups of faces or whatever. The disadvantage is that you are stuck with full zoom or nothing (if you zoom out at all you will see the lens barrel in the viewfinder) but the advantage is that the lens itself, because of its smaller thread size, is way cheaper than the Century lens for the DVX.

There is no Panasonic 1.6 tele-extender. The only option is the Century, and it's not an ideal solution: it's huge, expensive, and has a very limited zoom range. But if you need maximum telephoto from your DVX, it's the only game in town, and does provide a nice sharp image.
