Zoom H5 on A7RII

Good Morning,

I am currently running a Zoom H5 on top of my Sony A7RII. The Zoom is attached via a Sescom 3.5 mm Line to Mic -25 dB Audio Cable for Zoom H6 (9"). Line-Level of cable is plugged into Zoom and other into camera mic.

Line out on Zoom is currently not set to adjust any audio levels and in camera settings are Audio Rec Level 1, Audio out timing - Live, Wind Noise - off, Audio Record - On

The problem is, I feel i'm not getting the best audio on playback in my video files. Even when I record bird sounds or surrounding noise it comes out very low and soft even on the Zoom its self. The only sounds that are great would be sharper louder noise that are very close by. When I am recording into Zoom, I monitor audio with head phones and distant sounds are perfect in headphones but not so much on playback. I have my pre amps set to almost 9 on the shotgun mic.

In editing, I have to boost the audio DB for SFX and then you get that stereo noise which makes it unusable because it sounds bad.

The reason for the zoom, is I also run a wireless mic via XLR in the back from time to time.

Do I have the wrong cable into camera or is the zoom not set up correctly?

Thank you for the help

Not familiar with either piece of equipment. For recorder line-out to camera mic-in that cable sounds correct. But if you have the recorder set for mic level out that could be your problem. In that case you would need a non-attenuated cable.

Headphones inherently bring out lower level sounds. As Tom stated, if the Zoom's output is line level (unbalanced), the Sescom attenuation cable is correct to use.. if the Zoom output is mic level (which it very well might be) no attenuation is needed, so a garden variety 3.5mm TRS cable would work. I have not used either of those devices either.
Addendum: According to the H5 user manual specs, "stereo mini jack (rated output level –10 dBm when output load impedance is 10 kΩ or more"
So... using the Sescom attenuation cable is correct (assuming the camera's audio input is mic level via a 3.5mm TRS jack)
