Zoom H4n only working with on specific battery set?

I'm renting the H4n when I need it for my video production. I always rent it with the same guys (they are not really a renting company, small group/society of people who own some video/audio equipement which they rent occasionaly) but this is the first time I noticed that the H4n only works with their provided Enloop HR6 batteries (what is the difference between HR6 and R6 batteries - can't find the answer on the web)

I tried with my set of Enloops (the only differenc I see on them is that mine are R6, theirs are HR6) and with some cheap other AA batteries and the H4n won't even turn on (all of the batteries I tried were full). Anybody experienced something like that?

This is quite annoying since if I ran out of juice on the location I cannot just swap the batteries as nothing else works with the H4n (I guess it is time for me to buy my own recorder....)

Don't know about the Endloops, but most rechargeable AAs are 1.2 volts, Normal (alkaline) AAs are 1.5V. There is probably a battery type setting in the software menu which if set wrong, could cause premature ejacula.. I mean shutdown.

well after charging the ones that worked (since they showed at half capacity in H4n yesterday) now even they don't work (the batteries are full, tried them with other things and they work).

Just perfect, a couple of hours before shoot :/

But it does turn on when connected to USB (but can't really get to the settings menu with usb power to see what kind of battery setting is turned on)...

Have you tried normal everyday alkaline AAs.. if they don't work, I would think the device is broken.

I would surmise 'it has a problem'.. In the short term, I could only suggest an external battery in place of the AC adapter .. (if that power input works) I'm guessing it's probably 3-5 volts. (DC)
Good luck Crammond
