Zoom H4n & JuicedLink

When you are using an external xlr mic with phantom power, the Zoom eats batteries (like well under an hour between replacements), and the preamps are on the low end of OK.

But on the other hand, it is cheap and it records 24 bit wav files with broadcast wave format, so dropping things on the timeline is wonderfully easy. Plus no extra wires sticking into my dinky camera is very nice.

So to fix the battery eating problem, I bought a juicedlink with phantom power. You can connect it to the zoom through the 1/8in cable... and holy honkin' crap that sounds good. Like, really, really good. Turn up the gain on the juiced link all the way, turn down the gain on the H4n all the way (to 1, not below 1), and twiddle the dial on the juicedlink when needed, because the H4n limiter is, uh, limited.

It is an amazing combination if you want to record sound off camera.

The juiced link is ~12oz. It's is also about 1/16th of an inch too long to be able to just screw it and the H4n together and still connect the cable between them, which is significantly more annoying than it would be if it were a whole inch off.
