Zoom H4n Firmware Update Gives XLR Inputs Independent Audio Levels

h4n is beast.

No no no. Sound devices 702 is the beast. As far as I am concerned, after you get up to sound devices pre-amps the law of diminishing returns is massive. You can pay a hell of a lot more and get pre-amps built from space rock in diva and nagra systems, but I don't think many things sound better than a sound devices 702... the preamps and headphone amp are stellar and that is when the magic of high end mics really come out. I'm not bringing my sound devices 702 to a set for a paltry $200 a day though, and that's why I got out of doing sound. I was a freelance boom op / sound mixer for a while as I was toying with HD cameras. Put it this way, I have done over 80 projects yet I don't want my name connected to 78 of them and it's not because I did a bad job.

Sound is like the foundation of a house. People don't talk about the foundation of your house, they talk about your living room and the stuff on the top floors, but if the foundation is crappy and caves in.. well it doesn't matter much how nice your furniture is in your living room as it crashes into the mud of your rotten foundation.

Blackout I like the cut of your jib. I like the sarcastic banter on the set. And I am jealous that you have a Sanken CS-3e shotgun. People need to see the manifesto!

I was so frustrated that I came up with an idea (don't steal it) to do audio tips for whatever, production audio, and the guy teaching the tips would be so frustrated he would violently assault the kids doing something wrong. There would be a kid holding his iPhone with earbuds as cans, with a radio shack dynamic mic on a boom 10 feet away from the talent, then the tip guy just tackles him and savages him yelling how important mic placement is. Ahh daydreams.
