Zoom H4N DJ Board

What am I missing here?

After reading glowing review after glowing review of wedding videographers using the H4N for great audio I finally bit the bullet and bought one.

I plugged it into the DJ's board tonight and the audio is distorted and sounds like crap. I kept lowering the db, but even as the music got quieter it was still distorted.

So my question is this, what is the proper way to hook a H4N directly into a soundboard and get good sounding audio. I generally connect using the 1/4 inch connector on the bottom of the unit. Sometimes I connect using an RCA cable that is 1/4 inch on one end.

Any help would be much appreciated, I have another wedding tomorrow and I would love to figure this out.

Thanks

This is probably not a problem with the Zoom. There have been many threads about this exact topic, so search is your friend.

A good rule of thumb, is don't take a feed from any board unless you know what you are going to get, and the board operator loves you.

Yep after digging around yesterday I saw that. Can someone post a direct link to a pad that will work?

Thanks!

I would say that 90% of the time DJs give me a 1/4 connection, so what is a pad that would work on the Zoom H4N that would allow me to connect to the DJ board via 1/4 inch through the XLR input at the bottom of the H4N. Thanks again guys! I'm hoping to run out and pick something up today for tonight's wedding.

How does this device work? Where would I plug it in on the DJ's board and where would I plug it in on the h4n? Sorry, I'm searching everywhere for a solution, I'm used to connecting through the 1/4 connection.

It attenuates the signal so it goes between the board and the Zoom. Radio Shack adapters are your best friend. I carry every possible configuration in my sound box.

Just out of interest, I shot the wedding today at Tribeca Rooftop in lower Manhattan. I plugged my old Alesis Protrack into the mixing board and used the built in mics on the h4n pointed at the band. The guy running the soundboard asked me why I wasn't using h4n with his soundboard and I explained that I needed an attenuator and that there is no line level for the h4n. He said "sure there is, I work at B&H and this is one of our number 1 sellers!" I asked him if he would mind taking a look at the h4n and showing me how to set it to line level. He dug through the menus for 10 minutes and couldn't figure it out, finally he agreed with me that there is indeed no line in on the h4n. I told him that I'd see him at B&H this week when I come in to buy my attenuator!
