Hey guys,
I did my first wedding yesterday and used the Zoom recorders for my audio. I used the H1 with an audio technica lav on the groom, which worked flawlessly for the groom, bride, and officiant. I used the auto level feature on the H1, which seems to adjust the levels as necessary, such as move them up when it's quiet and down when it's loud.
I also used an H4n and patched into the DJ's mixer at the reception. I was using the 1/8" input because for some reason his XLR out was messing with the speakers and the 1/4" out wasn't. Anyway, I also had the H4n set to auto-level from the input menu, and almost all of my sound except for the important parts (toasts, introductions, bouquet and garter, cake cutting) is badly overmodulated. Basically this consists of all the music. While I wasn't planning on using this audio anyway, I was wondering what happened. I read that the H4n sets its level automatically and leaves it there, which doesn't seem like the same behavior as the H1, but I can't be sure.
Any word on what's going on with the auto-levels and how I can use them more effectively in the future? What is the function of the comp/limit options in the menu? Will utilizing these help make the H4n auto-level more like that of a standard consumer camcorder? These are mostly confusing to me because of the simplicity of the H1's auto-level system.
Thanks!
