Zoom H4 to measure decibels?

If you have an iPhone or an iPod Touch, you can download any number of dB meter apps for free. Lots of other analysis goodies too. Or, there is always Radio Shack for an inexpensive meter. Not an "official, calibrated" device, but will certainly work in a pinch.

A strange question, but.....can a Zoom H4 be used to measure the decibel loudness of a device, like an air conditioner or a motor?

If a device is repeatable, and has the accuracy required... any device can be calibrated to give a measurement... ok, not any... but many... in the case of the H4... that would require calibration with a given microphone, and the generation of sound at known/calibrated pressures...

Easier to buy the Radio Shack sound level meter... about $50 or so.
