Zoom H2 input from Mixer ?

Hi there.

Just want to make sure I am doing this right.

I am running a couple of XLR mic's into a Behringer MX602A. From there I take the main output and run that into a zoom h2. Now, If I run it into the "line in" on the H2, the audio is very soft and I have to boost the gain on the MX602A a fair bit to get good audio. If I run it into the "mic in" on the H2 with the gain set to normal on the H2 the audio is good. Signals are strong and normal gain on the MX602A and everything seems right.

But, a voice in the back of my head keeps telling me the MX602A Main out is supposed to be a line level output. I'm I loosing it here ?

Should it go to the mic input or the line in input on the H2.

Thanks

You could use the main outs or the RCA "tape out" outputs on your mixer (provided you have the right cable and/or adaptors to get into the Zoom) to feed your recorder. I would go "line in," not "microphone in," even though you can get more apparent gain. You are correct about line level (vs. mike level). BTW, what to you is "normal level," exactly?

I'd just start with the main output control about 12 o'clock, and the input control on the Zoom at about 80%, and go from there, monitoring carefully on headphones to make sure that you are not introducing any distortion into your recorder mix. Hit the Zoom pretty hard (but make sure you aren't clipping); if the file is a little low, you can boost or normalize in your DAW/NLE program.

Thanks

Yep that is what I thought I read some time back.

Normal is everything at or around the 12 o clock setting. Might have to bump that a little more with the line in and see how it comes out.

Yep, learned to monitor all the time, learned the hard way :-)
