Zoom H1n Recorder

I hope they keep the original h1, as its a great formfactor for what we use them for, which is giving them to people who have no idea what they are doing, so they can record meetings etc. I'm sure this new one is great, but having just an obvious big record button, and no other clutter of buttons on the front was nice.

I don't like that they switched to two triple A batteries instead of one double A battery. I find double A to be more common and needing only one is more useful in the field than finding two. Especially if you're in a remote location and running low on battery power and fishing to find one that has a charge. Much easier to find one than two.

Things I like from a first impression of this new recorder...

- They added a tone generator to set recording levels on cameras ( where you might simultaneously record to the H1n and a camera )

- They added a limiter ( no idea if it's any good, but it might be )

- Got rid of all the horrible mini-switches

The two recording samples sound good...

Ya, I agree. But if you're using rechargeables, lots of the AA chargers will also hold and charge AAA. So you could work around that. Not perfect, but this update looks pretty nice.

Sigh...four steps forward, one back...

When you use the "HOLD" on the Zoom H1n, will it prevent the rotary dial from changing the input level?
I'd hate to have the input level change because the knob gets moved while in someone's pocket.

This is the answer from BHPhoto:
When "HOLD" is used, the rotary dial is still active and the input level still be changed. Hopefully this potential issue can be addressed and fixed with a firmware update. Firmware updates are constantly being done to improve performance and quirks (based on consumer feedback).

It makes sense to some degree. There may be times when you will want to change the level during recording, but sometimes have everything locked.

Both options should be available if they could make it happen via FW.

What I use on dials that need to stay put is "board tape". It's white removable paper tape that is commonly used for labeling sound boards. Holds things in place and doesn't leave residue when removed.

@Noiz2, I have use gaffer tape for that, what is the difference with board tape, I mean because none of them leave residue, I have never seen
this board tape and could be a very interesting item to have.

Though I usually use 1/2".

Gaffer tape is a LOT stickier and can pull marking off. People use it but I think it's overkill for temporarily locking down some controls.

The other thing it is used for is for live shows or level setting in theatre. Run a strip down next to the fader and once a level is set you can mark it with a sharpie dot. A lot of times you are taking level notes on the fly while the show/ rehearsal is going on and this lets you have some accurate notes with out having to stop and write anything down. Once there is a break you can transfer those noted levels back to the Cue sheet they belong on. And sometimes, depending on the show, you can just use the marks and some fine sharpie notes to run the whole show.

Also useful for temp labels on cables and such.

About once a year I purchase about 15 -20 rolls of console tape (I work with a lot of large format consoles with bands and such). Jireh Supplies in GA, seems to have the best prices and selection.. colors and sizes of the 'ProTapes' console tape. For instance in the USA, the going price for a 1/2" x 60' roll of tape is about $9 in the art supply and office retailers, but less than $5 from Jireh. Shipping is free for orders over $50 (usd).

I would very very strongly recommend you use a Tascam DR10L instead as an ultra low budget bodypack recorder (which is what I lot of people used the H1 for, I did myself! But this was before the DR10L existed. And it is a massive leap forward for that purpose yet is about the same price).
