Zoom H1 - Corrupted file? anything I can do

hi all, filmed a wedding today with 4 speeches (4 zoom H1's)

all were still recording as usual when I removed them from the speakers, went through pushing stop on all of them and as usual you get a spinning display on the screen for a second or so whilst it loads the recently recorded file for playback. On one of the recorders (THE GROOMS!!!) this spinning just kept going for 10 mins or so until I had to take the battery out.

Now when I put the card into the PC there is a 32kb file on there instead of the 500mb or so wav file that should be there.

I take it there is nothing that can be done and the speech file is lost?

There was a situation like this recently posted about here; search the Audio forum, there may be a way to restore the file (unfortunately, I don't know how for sure myself).

What I can suggest you try is to read the card from the H1 directly, by using the USB out (rather than taking the card out and putting it into your computer card reader).

IF you don't write anything to the card it's quite possible to resurrect the file that was there. What happened almost certainly is that it froze while writing out header info, you shut it down and all that is visible is the place holder file it wrote when you started to record. The information should be on the disk. So you need a file recovery application to get it back. I'm on a Mac so that is all I can talk about but there are Windows applications that work the same magic. FileSalvage and Data Rescue are what I use. They take a long time and you may have to take the recovered file and re tag it as an audio file and you may even have to import it into a sound app as RAW data and tell it what the sample rate and bit depth is. But you almost always can recover the data providing that you don'r write ANYTHING to the card first.

If you have never done this and don't want to mess with it then you should find someone who does. It's kind of a waste to buy one of these apps if you don't help out friends because your probably going to use it once in a blue moon. And they generally aren't cheap.

Most though offer some type of trial where you can see IF it will find your file before you have to pay. And they all work a bit different so if the first doesn't find anything try #2.

Hi, if the file is there, this will find it:

http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk

I've used it to recover data from cards that have been formatted three or four times - it's the best recovery software I've ever tried, and it's free.

Good luck

thank you. Luckily I relied on camera sound for the speeches and although it was horrible to me, the couple didn't notice it and loved it so I had a lucky escape (and have since formatted the card so dont think I can test it now) however I will definitely bookmark that program and give it a go should anything like this happens again...
