Maybe this is a stupid question, but what exactally is so great about a zoom controller? I've never run into a problem that would be solved by one.

Re: Zoom Controller

It is of no use whatsoever because you don't use the zoom. Ever. >:(

Well, OK... you may sometimes... and in such a case, a controller allows you to (1) keep your hand on the pan bar, and (2) if your controller is programmable like the Manfrotto I have, you can program your zoom to be as slow as you want without having to worry about how much pressure you apply on the button. I do it all the time ! ;D

Plus, it looks cool and its sleek black coil lends it some casual but professional look which attracts a lot of female attention. Right. ::)

Then I'm gonna buy five!

Re: Zoom Controller

;D

I never use the zoom during a take unless a producer forces me, but I use it all the time between takes to resize the frame while keeping my hand on the pan bar, like Monglane said. Also, like he said, if you have to do a zoom during a take it is better to use the controller because it minimizes camera shake and is a more natural human position when combining it with a pan motion. :)

Re: Zoom Controller

Exactly.

Also, keep in mind that not everyone is shooting exclusively feature films with this camera! In live multi-camera shoots we do zooming all the time during the shot, sometimes combined with a jib move, sometimes from a tripod.

Put the camera on a jib arm and the need for a zoom controller becomes instantly obvious.

Re: Zoom Controller

If you do events like weddings you would use the zoom often and the controller would be very handy.

Myself I don’t do weddings!

I have never even been to a wedding!

You said it, Bro! As soon as that camera goes up on the jib, you're like, "Crap, now how do I get to the zoom?"

Also, if you need an extension cable, top-grade ones can be had from Varizoom, but you can also use a simple stereo 5/32" extension cable. They're also called REM cables, for starting/stopping audio tape recorders by using footpedals. ;D
