zeiss super speeds?

Why do Zeiss SuperSpeeds, which have rear elements the size of dimes, don't exhibit the same thing vignetting softness issues of other lenses? If the theory that the size of the rear aperature is why you get these problems?

They are designed properly. Alot of engineering goes into Zeiss glass, Though the WA lenses the 18mm and the 25mm do vignette......

I used a 24mm Zeiss Standard Speed on the Letus + Red video for most of it and the vignetting/portholing/edge softness wasn't there.

The other Standard speeds did it. All of them have tiny rear elements.

It's a matter of finding what works I guess.

Exactly. I'm using some old Nikon lenses from the 70's and can get images like the one here without the trouble of vignetting.

Nice image. Can you tell us your zoom setting for this shot (your HVX zoom setting). Just curious. On my 50mm 1.4 and 85mm 1.8, the magic setting is 20.6 but on the Nikon 28mm 2.8, I have to go to about 25 or 26 on the HVX zoom to eliminate vignetting. At this setting, it seems that I am cutting out a considerable amount of field of view, which is sort of the whole reason to use a wide angle.

I kinda feel like if you haven't established a zoom setting that sticks through each focal length then you throw off your "perceived" focal length selection altogether.

If every lens utilizes 27.3 (as an example that gives you a 35mm FOV), then the 28, 24, 20, 17 and 14mm distances are wide angles in comparison to 35 and up.

I haven't been in a situation where I found 28 or 24 to not be wide enough, and it should be noted that a Prime Lens set such as Super Speeds have 14mm or 16mm lenses at the widest angle. It makes sense to me.

I have a Tamron 17-35/2.8~4 that I only use between 17-28mm and it works great for the price paid.
