zebra question, just to confirm...

hi all,

i've been reading about proper reading of zebras, and see that most people reccommend to expose caucasian faces at just below 80% zebras...but, not to show any zebras.

for some reason, i thought that one should show some zebras at this setting on caucasian faces....

am i wrong? and should i definitely expose just up to the point where zebras begin to show, but not to the point where they are showing?

thanks a lot....

Light clips at 100 IRE, so if you show a couple zebras at 80 IRE, you'll be OK.

Re: zebra question, just to confirm...

The actual clipping happens at about 109 IRE, so even if you're seeing zebras when set to 105, there's still a chance there might be some detail in the shot. But don't count on it.

If you're setting for caucasian faces, 80% zebras on the hot spots are appropriate. When you don't want to see zebras at all is when you have them set at 105% -- ideally you'd keep the highlights in your images below the zebra point when you have 105% zebras. So typical DVXUser settings would be Zebra 1 at 80, Zebra 2 at 105 (if you have a 100A, if you have a 100 then you set Zebra 2 to 100). Then you cycle between the zebras to check for overall face exposure (80% zebras on just the highlights of the face) and then for blowouts (105% zebras).

There may be circumstances where you would let the 105 zebras blow out too... for example, in a dimly lit room, maybe lit by one practical lamp or a chandelier or something, it would be better to let the bulbs "blow out" in the scene rather than have the whole scene underexposed because you were trying to get the zebras to disappear...
