ZAXCOM DEVA II issues

MS is a good stereo technique, IF you're going to use stereo, but remember, film and video dialog is recorded MONO 99.99% of the time. Recordingt in stereo is pretty much limited to live music performances and sometimes for ambiance and FX tracks.

Have you looked on the Zaxcom website for their file conversion utility?

Hello everyone, this is my first thread around, i'm a starter in this area, but been working in the audio business for a few years, never had the chance to work on film projects, so now i've got one, and need some advices.

I need a start kit for a film production which is going to be indoor and outdoor, i already have some gear, mkh 416t w adapter p48, rode blimp, rode boom pole 3m, 4 dpa 4060, and a Zaxcom Deva 2.

Last year ago i bought a Zaxcom Deva 2 because i got it for a good price, but unfortunately i didn't know some things like it records on fat16, and the dvdram recorder was broken, so i'm afraid i've got just a a piece of junk?!!?!

So now i don't want to spend all that K on a Nagra VI or Aeta, but need something in between recording at least 4 tracks, the SD744 costs quiet the same as the 2 i named before so it's not an option.

So now the questions ;-)

1- for indoor i'm thinking to buy mbho 640 w Hyper with the baby ball and a windjammer
2- should i use an ms recording technique, indoor? i have the akg 414, do they be appropriate?
3- which kind of wireless do you recommend, Audio Ltd, lectrosonics or the sennheiser G3? i need 4 and i live in Europe so don't want to spend a lot of money on the costumers just to have a brand, if you know what i mean. I'm willing to make the effort if there's really a big difference between them.
4- The million dollar question, Isn't there anyway to convert the files from the zaxcom fat 16 to a mac nowadays, trough a new way, like scsi to usb then to mac???????
5- Am i forgetting anything???

If you are doing it seriously / professionally, then the only real options are the Nagra VI, The AETA 4MinX or the Sound Devices 788T.

Coming down a step, the Sound Devices 744T is really the best option - these are often available s/h as the previous owner upgrades to the 788T.

If 2-channel, then look at teh SOund Devices 702 or the Nagra LB.

Mics - MHHO are excellent value for money, about the same quality as SChoeps at a fraction of the price. MBHO make a nice fig-8 mic. for MS - or use the new Ambient AT208 EMESSER as this is also a good single-diaphragm fig-8 at a reasonable price.

All the wireess you recommend are good - the G3 is the most cost-effective. If you are in the UK/Europe I would go for Audio Ltd. over the Lectrosonics.

Not sure about file conversion from teh Zax to the Mac as I use a Nagra VI - maybe just re-record in real time using the digital out from the Deva into the digital in on whatever professional sound card you use for the Mac.

Forgetting? - headphones - I use the Sennheiser HD 25-1 and the new Amperior are also good.

I hope this helps.

FAt16 is a disk format not a file format. Mac can read and write FAT16 so you shouldn't have a problem reading files on a Mac. Most pen drives and "universal" USB and FireWire drives come formatted in FAT16.

Now Deva may also be using some weird proprietary file format??? I kind of doubt it though.

So if your drive can't read the disk it's probably bad (drive or disk).

Or possible 10.7 dropped FAT16 support??? I would be surprised but? So at least till OSX 10.6.8 FAT16 is not a problem.
