Just received my baseplate from Zacuto. It is really well engineered. The contact base plate (thats the plate that attaches directly to the base of the HVX is fantastic. It pretty much covers the bottom of the camcorder which is much better than the Chrosziel for my old DVX as it had a very small footprint plate that attached to the base of the camera.

The new Zacuto just feels like a better support instantly. because of the larger plate contact. Slightly heavier that the older DVX support system but this thing really is bomb proof. Solidly built and machined to perfection. My only gripe would be that they should consider adding some type of rubber base to the baseplate. so that when you attach the camcorder it actually grips to something other than metal.

$560 (US) + Shipping. They are based in Chicago.

As much as I think it's cool that "Zacuto" made a universal baseplate, they are incorrect when they claim to be the first.

The Petroff's SS08 (available through Ste-Man) has been out for years, and pre-dates all the cameras on the Zacuto page except the DVX100. Petroff also made a second version, I'm not sure if it's still available, but it added a slider for balancing as well.

If you don't want or need to hang 20 lbs. of AKS off the camera, but want a universal baseplate, you can save $100 with the Petroff.

I.

The Petroff is truly universal being able to adjust for every access. I was looking at the Zacuto and it doesn't look like you can adjust rods for left and right.

The Zacuto does have bars shift left and right. Click on their "how to" instructions link on the web site.

Just been to the Petroff website to look at the DV support system. It looks identical to the DVX/Chrosziel system except it has adjustments side to side and fore and aft.

Which bring me to my original post, the chroszeil baseplate has a very small footprint regarding the contact between camera base and baseplate, whereas the Zacuto covers the whole of the base of the HVX and it's bigger than the DVX.

It may be $100 more but I think its worth having less stress on the mount plate of your camcorder.

Hate to be a newbe , but what is the baseplate for exactly? Is it just so you can put stuff on your camera like a monitor and such?

Ya it definitely is the Vocas. You can see the adjustable eye-brow switches on the side. I just played with Chrosziel's new 5.65x5.65 HD swing-away box today on the Zacuto setup. It's a beauty!

The model you posted was designed for their prosumer cameras. Actually that box is used for the Panasonic, Sony and JVC cameras - the only difference is the size of the back to accomodate the different sizes lenses.

Chrosziel's 5.65x5.65 HD box is brand new. I haven't seen a picture of it posted anywhere yet. It's a much higher end box in capability and cost. It's similar to this box but can take the new larger 5.65x5.65 size filter:
