Zach Braff takes his 'Garden State' follow-up to Kickstarter

It will be interesting to see how big the backlash is from him taking studio money. I've already seem some people saying they are going to cancel their donations.

Worst of all, i've seen a few people say they will never donate to a Kickstarter project again, because they feel like it's become just a way for studio's/celebs to swindle money from the public.

How is anyone "swindled"? People are paying for an advance showing with a Q&A from the writer/Director. If you don't think the the ticket is worth it, don't buy it. Obviously lots of people think the 200 bucks is no different than paying for good seats at a Beyonce concert. I don't see any "swindling" going on. I see people paying for entertainment.

Now if they said, please DONATE money so this project can be made, and you get NOTHING, but we need, need, your help....then went out and got studio money and kept your "donations" anyway, I could see you complaining.

Anyone can help anyone else at any time they want to. You, me, Braff, can donate to any kickstarter they want to. Why do you get upset because Braff has a big successful kickstarter?

If people want to cancel their donations then let them lol...plenty of people won't and don't care to. They love the guy and will give the money for the rewards regardless. They want in...I'm keeping my donation because I want access to the rewards. I never thought my donation was making the movie possible, I figure the guy will get it made regardless.
 
I Like him. But then again some people know how to talk. If fans want to donate, that's fine. I don't do kick starters myself. What little money I can donate goes to people I think are having hard times. Just commenting out loud.

The movie trade publication "The Hollywood Reporter" released an article today with a lot of wrong information about our project and I need to clear up some of what they said. I seem to get called a "douchebag" quite often these days. And that's fine; not everyone's gonna root for my success... but I can't sit by while my fans get wrong facts.
This is a whole new way of making a movie. There is lots of discourse on Earth about it. Some of it is very misinformed. Let's clear it up so you have it from my mouth. I will tell you the truth. As David Mamet's writes in his masterpiece, "Glengarry Glen Ross": The truth is the easiest thing to remember:
The Truth:
— The story out there about the movie being fully funded by some financier is wrong.
I have said on here and in every interview I've done on this project that the film would be fully financed from 3 sources:
  • My Kickstarter Backers
  • My own money
  • Pre-Selling foreign theatrical distribution.
Those three amounts will bring us to a budget of around 5 to 6 million dollars.
— Nothing about the making of this movie has changed. This movie is happening because backers funded it.
This film would not be happening without my backers. The traditional way is to have a financier put up the money and then sell the foreign rights. What I did, was to say to my fans, "If you and I provide the capital, we don't need some rich dude dictating how we make the movie; we can then go sell foreign distibution and we'll be all the way to our goal. Are you interested in that? So far 38,455 people have said yes.
— What happened today is that a financial company agreed to fill in the gap between what Kickstarter backers have funded and what I have put in, and what the movie will actually cost. Shooting could not happen without this.
When you pre-sell foreign distribution, you don't get that money for some time. So you need to go to a company to provide something called "Gap Financing". They are essentially a bank. Loaning us the "gap" between what we've raised together and what we need to actually make the movie. I have no idea where a 10 million dollar number came from but it is wrong and a lie.
— This loan is secured against proceeds generated by selling the foreign rights to the movie. That's been the plan all along.
This loan, helps us start! We're opening an office and casting and we're fully under way. We couldn't be doing that without "Gap Financing" to cover our... (wait for it) gap. As these foreign sales are occurring as we speak at the Cannes Film Festival, you will likely be hearing more and more about them. It is good for us! More eyes on our movie.
— The film business is weird and complicated, and this is a great example of how that's the case. Consider this our first lesson in The Biz.
Let's be frank. There are people out there who don't want this to work. There are people out there rooting for me and you (if you're a backer) to fail. There are bloggers writing hateful things about me. I can take it. I'm kind of used to it. I hope you can. But if you feel misinformed or you no longer like this, you can cancel your support anytime in the next 8 days.
— This whole process has been amazing and is happening because of you. We repeat: because of YOU!
No matter what the haters write, this would not be happening without your support. If I failed at the end of the time allotment, this film would be put on a shelf, like others I've tried to make since "Garden State". But it didn't fail. It's making the whole Earth talk about the future of financing movies no studios want to make.

I'm sorry for the hoopla. I'm sorry if your friends think you've been duped. But you haven't been. This is real. Crowd-sourcing films is here to stay. Love me, hate me. We're gonna make a killer poo pooing movie. And I love you for it.

Who says I'm upset?...I was just offering an idea on how other celebrities could avoid the crap Braff stepped in. Celebrities DO care about their image. That's why they have publicists. If the front page of their kickstarter said, 5 percent of the proceeds will also go to this project that I think is worthy, it could blunt criticism. 5 percent of Braff's take could fully fund a documentary, or other small project. He gets to look good. Kickstarter wins. Some filmmaker who doesn't have the benefit of celebrity fame wins. Controversy averted. Unless your only metric of success is money, in which case Braff loses. But seeing how it was free money to begin with, it would seem like a small price to pay.

It's not "free money". Kickstarter is NOT donation based. It is NOT charity. Braff must produce and deliver all the rewards that people purchase on his kickstarter.

IMO, people that are jealous of someone that is successful won't be happy with 5%, or 10%, or 20%, or any amount. They will still ***** and complain. Braff and any celebrity that does a kickstarter is better off just ignoring the detractors and and concentrating on the fans that want to participate.

I remember reading this was one of the causes of the crash in the indie film market. You couldn't pre-sell the foreign distribution rights any more because no one wanted to take the risk, so you couldn't use that to get this "Gap" financing, so you had no money to make a film.

Sooner or later one of these things will appeal to each of us. (I wasn't part of the Veronica Mars buzz)
Another crowd funding effort, this one I just kicked in some $$ for. Adam Carolla trying to raise funds for his next film. Pretty good traction so far. From what I've heard of the synopsis, it sounds like a movie I'd like to see made. He's closing in on the halfway mark with plenty of time to go. I think with decent budgeting and the right equipment, the million dollar budget is sensible.

Also, a *sorta* funny video with Walter White to promote the campaign on the home page.

It's a funny pitch for sure.
 
For more clarification, I think the plot would be loosely based on Carolla's & others real life: Stand up comedians who had a good go in the 90's with TV sitcoms & movies. Making $$. But in present time these comedians are now in their late 40s early 50s. The party is over. Some are divorced and w/o steady work...so it's back to the road they go doing stand up at busted clubs all over the country.

This crowd funding thing is making more sense to me. I want to see this movie made. He's throwing in a free t-shirt & DVD at the $25 price point so the incentive is good. I'd send money for nothing in return based off the free podcasts he does every day, so swag is just a bonus.
