YouTube / Vimeo Export

What is the best way to export to max quality for Vimeo and YouTube. I have seen some pretty impressive videos lately on YouTube and I wonder if they have access to better uploads or if there is a big secret to Blu-Ray quality web videos. This pursuit for great quality on the web will never end I think.

If you have any ideas, I would love to figure it out!

For YouTube I always do a much higher bitrate as YouTube keeps the original file so that in future if it increases its streaming quality it can re-encode from the source you uploaded. I'll use bitrates from 17.5-25 (or even higher if there's grain or it's night time footage) even though I know the YouTube compressed version is much lower, I do the same for Vimeo even though they tell you to use about 5 Mbps.

I thought I'd posted this link before, but maybe not, it's a good read:

It's important to think of the files you upload to YouTube as golden masters, as they will be used as source material to generate video streams for years to come. Simply put, the better the quality of the file you upload to YouTube today, the better quality the viewer's experience will be throughout your video's life on YouTube.

H.264 is the compression you want to use to keep your upload time down and your HD quality up. For Youtube 1080 is fine but if you don't have a Vimeo Plus account you'll need to downrez to 720 to get the HD option activated. They say they'll downrez it for you but they're lying.
