You're killing me Canon!

I started a new job a few weeks back. Yay!

We're looking to get a new camera and then rent a second one for our big events. Right now we have three Canon 6Ds with an assortment of EF mount lenses.

What I need is something good for long events but also general purpose docu-style videos. My boss seems open to a Canon C100MkII at $3500. Anything more than that I don't think will fly. Even that is pushing it and requires him to go up the chain for approval.

I worked with the C100MkII for a few years at my old job so I know it's a good camera. It would certainly be an upgrade in many ways over the current 6D cameras. But I've also gotten spoiled shooting 4K on my personal GH4 for freelance work and I really like the ability to punch in when mastering to 1080p.

Right now more than most times I'm a little frustrated that Canon doesn't offer a UHD camera at a reasonable price. I could never swing for a C200 here even though that would be the ideal camera. What I really need is a C100mKIII that shoots UHD, even if it's only 8bit. Something natively compatible with Canon lenses, has long runs times, built in NDs, decent low light ability, a decent EVF and LCD.

I guess I'm stuck with another C100mkII at 1080p. Certainly not the end of the world by stretch but... you're killing me Canon.

You should have at least one 5D Mark IV in the kit...amazing camera. It only has half of the features you mentioned, but once you use the 4K and DPAF, you'll forget about everything else.

Or, or...compose the shot correctly on set so you don't rely on 4K for reframing. Whoa. Need a second camera angle? Uh, how about a second camera. Whoa.

GH2 is dirt cheap and has worked well for me as a B-cam for C100; or could get two C100 Mark Is. Much rather have a GH2 as the B-shot than a 200% 4K punch in from a C300 Mark II or C200. Everytime I see an editor punch in 200% on my 4K footage to reframe an angel dies. End the reliance on reframing in post! Support my cause! I'm taking donations.

As much as we butt heads, I agree wholeheartedly. I almost wanted to vomit when Convergent Design started advertising their Titan upgrade for the Apollo to use to do a four camera switched set-up with one 4K camera. It's bad enough that we're asked to do the work of three or four people by-ourselves sometimes these days, but now we're giving them the ability to shoot a four camera "production" with one camera. And they don't care if it's all really the same angle, as long as it looks like it's lots of cameras to "add production value" and they only have to pay for one camera.

Lol. That assumes I'm all willy nilly with my camera setups. Like "ah fug it, whatever!" I do compose my shots and I use second cameras when available. But there have been plenty of times a punch in has saved my butt in the edit. There has also been a couple times where a client has come back to me, someone not on location with us, saying something like "can we frame this out of the background" because it turns out they don't have the ok to show that or it conflicts with their messaging somehow. My point is, it's good to have. I'd rather shoot 4K and have that flexibility even if I never use it, then to only shoot 1080p and have to blow that up to 130% in post because of one of those above scenarios.
