Your Picks For Best Film - OSCARS!

"Away From Her" is a powerful, profound film that hasn't left my mind since I saw it months ago. The subject matter is heavy(mental illness, memory, love, codepedency, loneliness), but it is handled so gracefully that it really kills me that it is not up for best picture. It reminds me of a Bergman film. I hope Sarah Polley keeps directing.

I think it is more potent than any film I saw this year. I got really attached to the characters and their lives.

I don't understand how anyone can even mention Michael Clayton alongside There Will Be Blood or No Country for Old Men. Its a pretty conventional thriller and not that unique of a setup. It felt alot like The Constant Gardener or Syriana....people just happen to like it because it has a better payoff.
I have to agree with this. Michael Clayton was a VERY GOOD thriller BUT...Oscar worthy? I think not.

I may be the only one who thinks Away From Her is overrated and I didn't find it to be anything special.

No Country was great and its ending wasn't "bad" it just wasn't what I wanted.

Couldn't have said it better. Of all the detractors (everywhere, not just here) who have said that they didn't like the ending.....
It went out with a whimper....like the book...like old men....like life.

Roger Deakins KILLED IT! The cinematography was AMAZING in this film. Also, the Coen bros are due (payback for Fargo....hell, for Lebowski).

There's no reason NO COUNTRY shouldn't take home the top prize at tomorrow's Oscars. However, it is all political from this point, right? I mean all 5 films were good/great at times as well.

i saw it by myself last summer and I'll have to agree with you on this one, a good film, but i definitely didn't leave the theater thinking oscars

No Country for Best Film. And adaptation, director, supporting. I'm also thinking there is a chance it will get sound editing and mixing against the favorite (Transformers). My reasoning is that the Academy may not want to award Transformers three Oscars. It's harder to do the sound work when there's little or no music to help cover. And who will ever forget the dull pop of Javier's killing machine?

But, the Academy will have to diss the Transformer guy who has been nominated 20 times without a win. So it's a head-shaker. Thoughts?

I'm usually so enthused come Oscars, but this year, I'm somehow very underwhelmed....

I hope none of them win.

Hey, at least I'm not putting money on my vote.

tomorrow i'll be pulling for "There Will Be Blood" in every category for which it's been nominated. I thought it was as near a perfect film as I've seen.

i drink your milkshake

Yeah, I saw Blood for the 2nd time last night, and I appreciated it more than the first viewing. Man, there are some extremely long takes with very slow dolly's which I didn't pay attention to the first time through.

The movie reminds me of classic novels from Steinbeck or Faulkner. It is a force of nature.

Also Jonny Greenwood(of Radiohead) did the haunting, unique score which is incredible and not nominated.

Whenever I decide that I am going to watch the Oscars, I remember how much I hate them. :)

i still think eddie vedder should have gotten a nod if not for score then for original song.

not that any of them would have beaten once's falling slowly.

I have no problem with No Country winning. I just mentally chop off everything after the "confrontation" at the hotel. My problem is, I don't think I've ever seen two people look more underwhelmed by winning an Oscar. They should take it away from them just for that! I know they won before but c'mon!

i thought it was kind of refreshing and pretty humorous, especially their press conference afterwards. i think they're a good reminder of why you make films, not so you can win the biggest awards, but because you have a story to tell and a unique way of telling it (and if the academy happens to like it it's a nice little bonus)

I agree comepletely. I thought it humble and low key; they don't seem to take themselves too seriously and that is very refreshing.
