really, it's pretty gray. As a driver, I always watch both of my side view mirrors and listen carefully in case there's a motorcycle coming. There's been many, MANY times that I've been ready to change lanes, stop as a motorcycle comes zipping through and my gf (though a passenger so she's not expected to be paying as much attention) yelps as the bike comes through - didn't notice it at all.
many drivers don't, so as a motorcyclist it's really up to them to be extremely defensive. i now walk and take the bus/train more than i drive, and every day I see people doing things in cars where it's only luck that they don't hit something.
