Your Input : Future Trends In Video Broadcast Technology/Standards

Hi all,

I am very interested to know like in the coming 5-10 years from now, where will the video broadcasting & film industry be?

For eg, what kinds of cutting-edge video broadcast equipment/technology/format will be used (ofcourse TheRedOne camera counts here) & what are the new video formats/standards that are likely to emerge besides HD DVD & Blu-ray?

Will we be watching movies shot on 4K cinema cameras? Is there anything higher-spec than HD? Perhaps ultra-HD? Will videocameras that can record on holographic media be a reality?

How will film-makers be making movies 5-10 years in the future, or what are the emerging trends in professional wedding videography? More towards artistic, unobtrusive & creative, or photo-jounalistic, or more like acting out a movie script between bride & groom? Your input here will be very much appreciated. Let's all collaborate our minds together & see what are future trends so we can prepare for it.

methinks hd will dominate the market within about 5 years from now, and sd will become the 8mm of now. I wonder what direction films in general are going to go though...I mean how will people be able to continue coming up with original content? Say a high school love story - there are only so many ways you can change the basic storyline...

I think on the really high-end, movie studios will screen movies in the 3D format & audiences will wear special glasses that project the movie as though it is 3 dimensional. IMAX theaters have existed for quite long, but currently are expensive & movie choices are limited to certain movies only. Also, 4K resolution projectors may become more prominent as cost of acquiring these projectors will come down.

On the lower-end side of things, I think that the average Joe will be able to be a video news-caster. In my country, there have been quite a few seminars in which average people were given a mobile phone with limited video recording capabilities & told to come up with their own storyline & shoot a short movie entirely on this mobile phone. I think the trend is that anybody with a video-phone can be a broadcaster of news events as it happens, where it happens. Instead of relying on TV station's cameramen to arrive at the scene (in which case the event would have played itself out) ordinary folks can record what's going on & TV stations can use their footage & pay them a small sum.

Perhaps this is already happening in many countries, but is still in it's infancy, or still has the potential to develop in a great way. Any other comments are welcome.

If my above comments are true, then what would differenciate the professional videographers/budget film-makers with high-end professional camcorders from the average Joe who uses a mobile phone with limited video recording? How will the pro videographers keep up to the fact that now ordinary people can shoot & edit their own videos & post their work easily on the Net (Google Video, UTube, MetaCafe, etc) for all to view? Will the only difference be in the video equipment being used? Will our trade be threatened because of this "great equalizer?" How can we pros remain on the cutting-edge & remain relevant to differenciate ourselves?
