Your Downfall! Gulp.

I have no idea if AI will save the world or be the end of it or be something in between! I do know that I’ve always loved creating things since I was a kid. As I grew older, I fell in love with films and eventually started creating tutorials and short films (and everything in between). It’s my passion (for better or worse).

To deal with my love and hate/fear of this AI technology, I created a video about current AI issues and possible future AI catastrophes.​


Is this going to become reality? I sure hope not.

 
Technophobia is a natural reaction we have. It goes all the way back to Aristotle who looked dimly on books as a threat to our memories. The Gutenberg press and the industrial revolution provided the same fears of loss of jobs. Manufacturing automation in the 50's and 60's provided the same concerns.

The older we get, the more we fear technology. I've been amazed at how, no matter how much we automate and eliminate jobs, people still find jobs. But now I'm old and I have to admit, I really wonder about AI's impacts.
 
Ben does a good job here of articulating how I feel about AI, both in regards to its impact on high end Hollywood movies and ultimately how I feel it will impact what I do. I don't work on Hollywood movies, but the commentary still applies I think .

 
As I use this technology, I see it getting better and better in a short amount of time. Eventually, it won’t need my input.

When I watch movie credits showing hundreds of talented people who have worked together on a film and made it great, it makes me sad to know that they may lose their jobs and not be able to support their families.

We did this to ourselves. This isn’t ordinary technology that’s a tool that people can learn how to use, it’s really a non-human entity made to replace people. That’s disturbing. When I look at those movie credits, I’m reminded of a large group of people working together, not one dude sitting at his computer typing a prompt. Filmmaking was a collaboration between people who took years to learn their craft.

When you generate something, you feel like a god. But it’s an illusion. The AI is doing the heavy lifting and it’s not coming out of the air, it’s learned from hardworking humans. Plus, it’s an environmental nightmare as far as water usage and environmental impact.

All of the past automation was non-human entities that were made to replace people. What's fun is how we guess as to how these technologies will affect us. History indicates we are usually not very good at guessing how things will turn out.

This is different. It will be smarter than people and do things that we don’t even understand or are capable of understanding.
 
That is a useful distinction. What's intriguing is that there is no way to know how this will affect humanity. Let's say AI replaces 30% (pick a number) of workers. No one can predict what that means.
 

And I, for one, welcome our new AI overlords. I'd like to remind them as a trusted human, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their factories.​
