I know that a lot of DIY'ers who are making some fantastic skater dollys are configuring a type of laser pointer to be a quick-alignment tool for the wheels, without the reference card.. just like the genuine skater dolly.
A suggestion.. instead of using laser pointers.. (alignment, batteries, difficulty with on-off button), why not just set up quick little registration spikes on the wheels, that will hold a snap-on peep-sight.. similar to a gun. You just snap it on and look through it.
You could make an even easier one using a V-notch type sight found on most pistols (BB-guns.. etc).
Just a suggestion. I've never made one of these, but it sounds simpler. Of course you'd have to lean over and look through it, maybe that is one drawback (or use a small 2inch mirror mounted on the back of it, angled at 45degrees up).
See, its the military guy in me, always wants to line something up as a target!!!
