You think they will take over the world one day?

I'm telling you, Sony is going to rule the world. They got the Playstations, the electronics, movies, and now a force of 3 feet high robots to enforce the purchase all that is Sony. Personally I don't mind, robots rock. So you know, if you can't beat them, join them.

Oh yeah, just because they run on human blood is nothing to be afraid of. We make to much blood as it is anyways.

:D :D :D

I love these things...I think for some reason that one of the first applications for domestic robots will be pets, cat's, dogs that sort of thing. No need to feed them or take them to the vet and just switch them off when you go on vacation.Having them introduced in that capacity might also help people aclimatize themselves to the technology. I've thought for years that there is a huge market for cuddly robot toys like teddy in AI that could be programmed to mind your child as well as teach and play all the while devoting total unselfish attention a job parents have less and less time for. they could be programmed to monitor physical health, mental health and asses abilities, strengths and aptitudes. The posibilities for this technology are endless. I'm sure there will be problems at first but I don't buy into the idea of them taking over. people are generally afraid of any new trchnology. When they invented the steam engine that would travel at 30 miles per hour, people were saying that you would die at those speeds, the human body could not travel at 30mph and live to tell about it. How fast were we going on our way to the moon? Robots...Bring em on ya :D

This goes perfectly with something I just read on one of my students notebooks. As you know the translation over here is funny sometimes. Anyway, on the label of the book it said "This notebook was made with future technology."

I don't know about you but this "future technology" scares me.

All that footage was CG - I did it in about twenty minutes with my 3d Studio Max on my old PII Micron XKU. I think the footage looks like ****, but I'm glad you guys enjoyed it!

Anyone who denies the existence of robots may be robots themselves.

Those things are creepy looking and I want one very, very badly. That fan dance footage is sweet.

Anyone knows the origin of the word robot and what was the story they appeared in?

(No Google or encyclopedias, please!)

Without Google, I'm powerless. Like Superman in the presence of Kryptonite.

What is the origin?

Okay, it looks like people don't want to play any trivia games tonight. So yes, my friends, other than kolache (the famous Texas pastry), and dollar (yes, the God Almight of our times), the great contribution of Czech culture to the world's vocabulary is robot. I googled it myself to see what's out there, and some of the descriptions are... ehm... funny.

So - yes, it was first used by Czech playwright Karel Capek in his play R.U.R. which stands for Rossumovi Universalni Roboti (Rossum's Universal Robots). In it, robots eventually DO take over the world (that was not a novel idea back in 1921, of course, as it is not now).

Contrary to what at least one of the sites said, the word 'robota' does mean labour, more specifically hard or forced labour or servitude, and even though the word itself is rarely used in modern Czech, pretty much everyone knows its meaning (unless they regularly skip history classes in 7th Grade). The 'Tolerancni Patent' of 1789 (a kind of decree) by Emperor Josef II (yup, the same 'Majesty' guy from Amadeus, whose sister Marie Antoinette was executed by French mob in the name of Liberte, Egalite, Fraternite), meant end of the forced labor in the Austrian empire (including the Czech lands). It was a big deal, so it made it into history books...

But I digress. R.U.R. is a great play, I've been searching for English translation on the net, but didn't find one. If you come across one, let me know. It calls for a film adaptation (in case someone gets the idea and makes the next sci-fi blockbuster, you heard it here first).

Damn, I should get some kind of medal for my promotion of Czech culture...

Anyhow, to answer the question in this thread: In case you've had any doubts, think of all the times you couldn't get cash from an ATM, or someone on the other side of the phone would say "I completely understand your situation, Sir, but the computer won't let me do it."...

...or all the time you spend on DVXUSER.COM... ;D
