You know what bothers me...

I appreciate your enthusiasm, but SAG is not an entity you just want to dismiss. there is a difference between asking an actor their age to determine if they are appropriate for the role (which is discriminatory in SAG's view) and asking if they are under or over the age of 18.

the only two questions I've ever heard casting directors ask in regard to age are: "what is your playable age range" and if there is a question as to being a minor, "are you over 18?". but I've never encountered a casting director who asked, "how old are you?" I didn't understand why this was always danced around, but now I do.

I'm a SAG signatory, and while I understand their reasoning totally, I even agree that I don't give a crap what age someone is if they can play what I want, BUT that being said you are allowed to ask under/over 18 aren't you? Because if not, I would honestly have to break that rule, I mean what other choice is there? I cannot afford on a SAG Indie budget to hire a 17-year-old actor, I just can't do it. The state laws are too tough on working with under-18s, so it'd be extremely important for me to make sure that person is over 18. I think that's a fair question as an employer and I would have to agree that any state laws supersede SAG's codes.
