You know fast food is bad for you...

And, just for giggles, why not make you own hamburger, using whatever you consider high-quality foodstuffs, and fries and leave it out on the counter.

It, too, will stay pretty much the same as the McD's version....that's just how beef and bread behave when left to dry in the open air. Nothing to do with preservatives, et al.

Supersize Me demonstrated that is certainly not true. Their control burger went rotten pretty quick and grew fungus, and started smelling so bad they had to throw it out.

Then they faked it. If you leave it out in the open (not excessively humid) air, all it is going to do is turn into a hockey puck, and all the bread will do is get stale.

It's only when there's a nice bit of humidity and/or no air circulation that they will start growing things on them.

Nutrition is not confusing.

If you want to lose weight and stay healthy, eat fewer that 10 grams of fat each day. Limit saturated fat to 3 of those 10 grams. Avoid all trans fat. Always eat whole grains. Consume 3 or 4 fruits and 3 or 4 vegetables each day. Only drink water. Limit alcohol to one drink per day. Limit sweets to one serving per day.

It's that simple.

I guess you have some sources and numbers/statistics to proof what you say or is it just your personal experience?

I I'm willing to bet my bucks the meat in a McDonald's burger has more chemicals in it and is made from poorer quality meat than the average supermarket hamburger.
.

According to McDonalds their burgers consist of 100% pure USDA inspected beef; no fillers, no extenders. Prepared with grill seasoning (salt, black pepper).

Now give me your bucks Java, you lost your bet on common sense.

Well, if you watch the vid they put them in glass jars, not in the open air. But the control burgers and fries went bad almost immediately. The McDonald's burgers did get moldy after several weeks. But the fries...remained pristine.

I'd like to see an independent source test that. I know what beef tastes like. I know what paper tastes like. I know what McDonald's tastes like, and it ain't beef.

That is true. I find that because of the fact the here in Canada they wrap the burgers in recycled cardboard boxes. It imparts a nasty taste to the burger. It tastes like what it came in, carboard.

But you baby boomers asked for it. Low fat, enviromentally friendly shi*, and then wonder why your food tastes like shi*? That's why. That's what you get when you open your mouth.

20 years ago, you could only wish to have a Whopper from Burger King.
Nowadays, it's a half teaspoon of lettuce, 1/4 ts of ketchup and there's your poo pooing burger.

poo poo me not. I will take a picure of it if you like. It's pathetic.

Thanks, over eaters of North America. You ****ed it for all of us.

It's very basic nutrition information combined with some common sense, Frank. If you limit yourself to 10 grams of fat, one dessert, and one beer or glass of wine per day, it's virtually impossible to eat enough in other (limited to nutritious, per the diet) calories to avoid becoming or staying trim.

It is also from personal experience, as I had mentioned. Ten years ago, when I was 28, my doctor told me that my cholesterol level was borderline and ordered me on a low-fat diet. I read a 500-page book on nutrition. In two months, I went from 210 lbs and a 196 cholesterol level (I forget the breakdown) to 160 lbs and a level of 142. Again, I forget the breakdown of the HDL and LDL but I do recall that LDL went down and HDL rose. Yes, I was motivated by fear; however, keep in mind that the doc said it was only borderline.

The directives I gave here are a distillation of the book I read and the diet I followed, and still follow in a more relaxed manner. The only major oversight I can see is with regard to sodium, which should be limited to 2 or 3 grams per day. I never add salt to food so it's not an issue.

It's not rocket surgery. Frankly, Frank, I'm beginning to think peoples' mentions of being confused about nutrition or wanting proof are simply ways to avoid a change in diet. The thing about it that perhaps is the most surprising detail is that I enjoy everything I eat and I don't feel like I'm missing anything. If you like pizza, eat whole wheat pizza with low-fat cheese and vegetables. That's what I do. Yeah, I know you think that's flaky but I'll let you in on a secret: it tastes even better.

Don't eat every day in fast food restaurants!
Then, NO poo pooING PROBLEM!

Give the rest of us a break that only order out once a week.

poo poo me gently!

Can't even get a decent burger or sub these days thanks to these low fat over eating right offs.

Maybe you never lived in my time, when food was actually FOOD.
And don't blame me for being mad. I'm Damn mad. Fat poo pooing Baby Boomers can't control themselves.

//Sorry for the outburst. Man, I miss the old burgers with the big lettuce, tomatoes and dripping sauce all over the place.
Sigh. Now I get a dried up shriveled up old burger. Thanks. hahaha. Oh well.

Of course, they sell the biscuits in pairs...

That's why it's not the one that you can see that kills you; it's the one that's been stalking you from the side, that you never even knew was there. Either way, the imporant thing is that you're still alive when they start to eat you...

...no, wait, that's velociraptors.

Never mind.

Not so fast; there's some missing information. USDA-inspected beef comes in a series of grades. Is the stuff McDonald's makes into burgers Prime, Choice, Grade A, what? I suspect that for simple economic reasons it's going to be a mid-to-low grade of beef which means that it may not compare favorably to a meat-counter-made patty and certainly not to what you could prepare if you purchased whole cuts and ground them yourself.

And for the most part, I second what Jordan has to say. Unless you have one of a number of pretty rare metabolic dysfunctions, controlling caloric intake, minimizing fats and sugars, getting regular meaningful exercise and eating more fresh and less mass-preparation-type foods is an effective general approach to improving one's health. If you want to get into competitive bodybuilding or are prone to blinded-by-science hyperanal detail management then sure, you can make it as complicated as you want. But it doesn't have to be.

Fast food is indefensible.

Economically, it represents a one-two punch right to the jaw of the taxpayer. First you have the annual BILLION+ dollar corn subsidies which provide the very bedrock of the industry. Without these, not only would there not be a dollar menu, there wouldn't even be a ten dollar menu. Inevitably, millions of people come down with type 2 diabetes, heart disease, various cancers and all the other adjoining health problems directly linked to a diet of mystery nuggets and pseudo-cheese burgers and who do you think gets stuck with the bill for a majority of these cases? The tax payer of course! Through medicaid and medicare Dave ends up paying for Bob's horrible diet of dollar menu sludge.

Every pound of animal protein requires more than ten times that amount of grain feed to produce. In a world where 15 million children die every year from starvation, that is almost absurd to the point of hilarity. Just imagine, for a moment, what future generations will say about us...

When you buy fast food you also support factory farms which are, without question, one of the most truly, literally, evil industries civilization has ever witnessed. Swine flu? MSRA? Circovirus? Bird flu? Antibacterial resistant strains of E-coli? Mad Cow disease? Foot and Mouth disease? You can thank your local factory farms for all of them.

Factory farms also contribute more to global warming than automobiles and is one of the leading causes of deforestation, including the rainforest. You want to save the environment? Don't buy a Prius, just stop buying fast food!

Finally, anyone who's seen what the BILLIONS of animals endure inside the walls of factory farms everyday and still eats the end product is, quite frankly, a sociopath. Poultry and beef farmers (back when they actually were "farmers") from a century ago would fall to their knees and weep if they saw the living, breathing, Hell that would eventually become their profession. Factory farms are nothing less than soulless, barbaric concentration camps for animals. The suffering inflicted there on a daily basis is indescribable.

The way forward is to repeal all corn subsidies and then use that same money to subsidize fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Were this to happen, fast food would become fiscally impossible and all the other problems would fall away in response.

Better still, tax fast food like we tax cigarettes and alcohol, as the ailments arising from fast food (and processed food in general) are orders of magnitude more prevalent and costly than the ailments arising from cigarettes and alcohol combined.

This generation of kids is the first one that is expected to have a shorter lifespan than their parents.

Unfortunately, the regulatory bodies responsible for keeping agriculture industries in check have bowed to every piece of dirty silver they were offered. the first victim of this corruption is the family farmer, who grows increasingly rare as more and more bribery-induced legislation is passed with the sole purpose of driving them out of existence. The second victim is us, the consumers, whose food becomes increasingly contaminated and exponentially damaging to everything around us.

The good news is that none of this is sustainable. Even if we're too stupid to change anything, inevitably it will all blow up in our faces one day, probably from some factory farm borne superbug.

Nature always gets the last laugh.

That post was rather apocalyptic, although well-written.

I would like to see citations for those numbers there.

And the one thing that really stands out to me - if you kill fast food, you kill an industry. In what setting does killing a major industry do any good for a country?

Could the situation be better? Always. Of course. And I'd like it to be. But blaming the common American for choosing a fast food diet and blaming every US politician for taking bribes...again, quite apocalyptic.

S'all. Don't feel like typing right now. Too much work to do.

@arroway

You watch too much TV.
You believe in swine flu and global warming?

"Nature always gets the last laugh."

That´s true. Millions of life forms extinct from this planet long before the dawn of mankind. Why should we be an exception?

Frank, the distinction is that - to the best of our knowledge - those myriad extinct species didn't consciously act toward arranging conditions conducive to extinctificating themselves.

Oh come on!

Those tyranossaurus were just asking for it, keeping the planet in the way of that asteroid trajectory and not having a space program with Bruceaurus Willis.

And the pterodactyls, with the way they dressed!

Honestly, those Mc Donald's fries are the best and I love a Burger King whopper. But I just do subway or most of the time now simply cook. There's always pizza. LOL.

You guys are making me hungry! Stop it!

I'm not trying to be a holier-than-thou type, but this thread is part and parcel of why I have mostly given up on fast food...AND given up on shopping in the aisles of the grocery store.

I put a Lean Cuisine in the 'wave one day and read the directions: "Cut slits in the covering of product." PRODUCT?! I thought I was eating food? I don't wanna eat your PRODUCT. Then when you look at the ingredients listed on any food that comes in a box or can, you see a bunch of stuff that doesn't sound like food... you begin to understand why a majority of foods out there ARE indeed products.

After having my son, I realized that if I wanted to enjoy him as he grows up, and in order to be an involved dad who actually goes outside to play with my kid(s), I wanted to TRY to live a little healthier lifestyle. So, I TRY to run a few times a week, and my 2.5 yr old and I are outside playing as much as possible. But food has SUCH an impact on how you feel, and your energy level.

If it didn't GROW, I ain't gon' eat it.
