You *HAVE* to watch this.

I've been up close to the Omni many times, and it's not really as big as you would think. Also I'd imagine that future designs of it are going to be smaller in scale. Once they include trackers in the shoes and etc and the rest of the VR world catches up, its going to be awesome.

Well it's too big for my home office. :)

I'm just not too sure about the omni. It's a good start, but it's very limited. When I play FPS games it's all about the cover system. A quick watch of the battlefield 3 demonstration I notice he can only run out and shoot out in the open, which quickly leads to his death. He can't get to low cover with the design of the OMNI. I'm sure you could do it with the press of a button, but then we're back at square one, where your standing but your character is crouched with his back against a wall. This current model of OMNI will only work with specific games, or games designed for it.

Even if we could devise a system where you could crouch and jump and do various movements with the OMNO v10, we run into a problem. The Wii problem, do gamers really want to be moving around so much for so long? At first I thought the Wii was the future of FPS, but after trying it out myself I realized the problem. Aside from being inaccurate (which can be fixed) playing for 3 hours with your friends (holding the wiimote) will get tiring. I feel that the OMNI is just going to turn into what the Wii is all about, party games and fitness games. Although being only for one person, it may just be fitness games.

The Oculus rift paired with the Omni (perhaps a future one) is also going to still be limited by the human body. Sure you could swing a simple punch, but what if you want to play a martial arts master? Then there are all the other senses, like tactile, kinetic and smell that are a million miles away.

Anyways I'm interested in this system and hope it does really well. Can't wait to have my own Holodeck. :)

Humans will ALWAYS have a need for storytelling, stories tell us our history, excite our imaginations and guide the personal development of our morals outlooks on life. The mediums might change, but the need for stories and storytellers never will.

Will 2D moving pictures ever become obsolete for humanity? I seriously doubt it (certainly in our lifetimes at least), but even if they should be replaced by some other medium down the road, I don't see the issue - it'll only be replaced by something better (people won't pay for a lesser experience).

Just because those 3D figures look realistic when they're motionless, that doesn't mean they will look real when they start moving.
3D figures have looked realistic for a number of years now. But once they start talking or become animated, the facial expressions and lifeless reactions are a dead give away. There is no way one of this figures can substitute even an amateur porn star, where facial expressions are everything. Film actors are equally hard to replace because their personalities come across so strongly through their acting and their voice. Figures only lip sync to someone else's voice. Games have a lot to look forward to, but I doubt this will have an impact on the way films are made.
