Yongnuao YN-600 Air Edition

Does anyone have any experience of the yN-600 Air?

I see it on ebay and amazon, thinner than the standard yn-600 but very little in terms of review. The small size makes them an attractive option, but what is the power and quality of light like.

I'm looking to buy two panels, I'm not sure if I'd need a softbox too - budget no more than $500, and from scouting around it looks like I could get a couple of used F&V K4000; some of the non-air yn-600 or other budget panels. They will be quite close to the subject ~1.5m, so the physically larger size of the k4000 is attractive and might avoid the need for a softbox. Where is the smart money in sub $250 (per panel) LED lights?

Any thoughts much appreciated.

I don't have any experience with the YN-600 Air, however I own the regular YN-600 as well as 2 YN-300's and a YN-300 Air. In the regular models (300, 600, 900) the model corresponds to the number of individual LED's. This is not the case for the Air models. The YN-300 Air has only 96 LED's and is significantly weaker than the standard model.

Younguo says CRI - 95% . I believe that as the older YN600's are pretty darn good color. I love my original YN-600's , good color , tremendous output and I love the remotes. Of course the price is fantastic. Very slightly green but i often don't correct at all. I like that the "Air" finally have one pot for color and one for brightness instead of one for 5500 and one for 3200 - so now it will be much easier to use a bi-color.

Output of the air model is hard to judge though. The LED's clearly look different - they're larger from the looks of the online video so the number isn't comparable.
Brightness is hard to figure. A post on Amazon says its a lot dimmer than the owner's older YN-600 which matches what Murtland says here. However the Air has a beam angle of 110 degrees vs around 50 for the older unit. So is it total lumens that's different or the beam angle? The specs list 4800 Lumens for the older unit and 4000 lumens for the Air.

I like having barndoors for the ease of diffusing to make it softer but this one is already larger which tends to be softer. If the output was similar I might buy a bicolor but not if its 3 x's dimmer.

Interesting - I guess these are pretty new as they are cheap / big, but yet no real reviews from owners.

One of the reasons I am interested in them is that they are relatively big for the their size, might mean that I can get away without using softboxes with them. Not sure whether to take a chance on them; or get the smaller HF627s. Quite a bit more money and will take longer to setup with the softbox expanders.
