Yikes! Probably gonna need a little advise...

A friend is mailing me tapes of a short they shot in the hopes I can salvage a movie out of what sounds like a mess of footage. They have no info on camera or settings. From looking at an on set photo I think they shot it on a Sony HVR-V1U, which leads me to believe they probably shot it in HDV. (It's been a while since I've done anything film-wise so I'm really out of the loop when it comes to technical stuff)

Here are some of my initial questions I hope I can be advised on:

1) Can I playback and capture Sony footage(whether hdv or dv) with a Panasonic hvx200 or dvx100 used as a deck?

2) Is there any way to tell if the footage is hdv or dv?

3) Is there any way to tell if it is 24p or 24fps or 30etc?

4) If I can capture with the hvx as my deck, what Capture preset do I use, and what Devise Control preset do I use?

I am running Final Cut Studio 5.0.4 on a PowerPC Dual 2.0 G5.

I know I could potentially figure stuff out by playing around, but I'm afraid of damaging either the camera or the tapes, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I think I get the tapes tomorrow so I will update what they are if that is necessary to know for answering. Thanks.

If shot HDV I don't think the tapes will play back on either of your DV cameras. You'll need to rent/borrow a deck or camera to ingest.

Exactly- you would need the same kind of camera too because there are a couple of different flavors of HDV floating around each with incompatible formats.

Thanks for the replies,

In an unexpected twist... though using a camera that shoots HD and 24p, they shot it DV 60i.

So, at least I can work with it without seeking out the camera.
