Yet another system bottleneck question :-)

hi everyone:
just want to say big thanks to everyone here in the forum,
you all have been very very helpful and informative!

I just received my new custom setup editing pc,
its a i7 3770 with 16gb of rams on a Asus Z77-m motherboard,
initially I propose to include a SSD for the system but,
will budget got slashed.

now I start editing and playback all fine but rendering
cpu workload would not go up above 40%,
I work from a lowend usb 2 external harddsik!
resource monitor show disk I/O of 3MB !!?
see screenshot
workload vegas10 rendering mov sorenson highest quality email.jpg

I plan to show evident to dig more fund,
just wish to know what you guys think,
any other source of bottleneck in the system?
will it better be Raid harddisk or ssd?

thanks again and have fun guys and gals!

yes its 64bit all right,
what reasonal disk I/O
should we expect for
usual h264/avchd rending?
30Mbs is like less than
4MB/s.

:-)

To be honest, I just ran a test on my system and I also got 3MB/S, but my CPU was near 100%. I only have a dual core, which is probably why. Some codecs can't use more than 2 cores.

hi just some update:

I use ImDisk to create a 4gb virtual ramdisk drive
and do a rendering test of 20 seconds timelapse
to cineform key 422,
finally the cpu load jump to 96%,
though the rendiring time only shorten from
3'23" to 3'10",

thinking about SANDISK XTREME 120gb....

side note , for i7 3770 cpu, must set maximum
rendering treads to 8 ,
set to 16 treads Will slowed the rendering time to
5 minute plus!
