Yet another Dolly Thread!

The corner pieces are from Home depot. I'll check on the name and get back to you. Hopefully I'll even have a brand/part #/SKU

I figured I would ask this question in this thread instead of starting a new one...

How exactly is the shelving bracket mounted to the base of the dolly? It looks like you guys are drilling right on the corner and putting a bolt through, but isn't that a bit difficult to hold steady to bolt through? And doesn't the actual bolt wiggle a bit since it's not resting flush with a surface?

I bought the skateboards last week and am building tomorrow, so I figured I would ask. Thanks!!

I am not sure I understand why you need soft wheels. When I went to the skate shop to look for wheels they said the softer stick to surfaces more. I decided to take their advice and go for a stronger wheel that wouldn't stick.

My BIGGEST problem is that I can not get the wheels to stay tight! I have to constantly use my wrenches to tighten the bolts on either side. Is there a way to fix that?

I also noticed that immediately after I attached the wheels, and after some tightening, the barrings were pushed further inside the wheel than I was able to get them with my own hands. So the washer that sits between the wheel and the angle bar got pushed into the wheel too. I've added a few more washers, stacked next to each other, and that seems to do okay for now. Hopefully the barrings won't press in any further as time goes on.

I just worry that every time I have to retighten the wheels, I am pressing the barring in even further. This is my very first attempt at a dolly mind you. And I am trying to do it the way QuartZ did.

Or get lock tight nuts, they have silcone inside them. I would also get locking washers. This type of washer is split and should remedy the issue.

Lock Nut Questions

Lock Nut Questions

I've been looking online for some place that sells locktight, but I am only finding other online threads with people talking about the product. I've tried "locktight", "lock tight", "lock-tight", and I saw a "lock-nut" so I tried that too. But I found nothing. I did searches inside the Lowes and Home Depot pages but the closest thing I found was the "Ez-Flo Faucet Locknut Kit (Pkg Of 5) Sets", and it's wrenches which you can see here:
EZ-Flo Faucet Lockbut Kit

Also, if I use this, would there be any way to then remove the nut in case I need to replace the wheel?

Hey Mick... I actually have locking washers, but they aren't split. I am using these: Metric internal tooth lock washer (The image of the washer is on the far right.)

Is that basically the same thing? When you say "split", what exactly am I looking for? An incomplete circle shape?

If memory serves me correctly, the technical name for the "Loc-Tite" nuts IDV is referring to are called "Acorn Nuts" and available at just about every hardware store and labled as such. They are an excellent choice for this application as they do not require lock washers and can be basically tightened as much as you want, or just enough to seal the threads. Either way they are not going anywhere. I use them on all my dolly platforms and couldn't be happier.

Hope this helps,

Rich

Ooh terriffic! That sounds like a plan. I don't know what is under that dome shaped cap that keeps it from coming off, but I will give it a try.

The screw that is going through the wheels sticks out a bit (a little less than half an inch) - so because I am without a saw, I am concidering buying extra nuts or possibly a bunch of washers to fill out the excess screw that the acorn nut wont be able to cover.

Acorn nuts are the ones that are only open on one end and you can only tighten them so much (no place for the bolt to go). http://www.royalenfieldusa.com/product_info.php?cPath=1_11&products_id=108

Oh, yeah, and if you can't find Loc-Tite, paint or nail polish will work.

ChainSmoker.. when I initially went to the hardware store, I did look for smaller bolts, but this was the closest thing they had to fitting. The next size smaller than what I purchased was TOO small. But I've been going back to different hardware stores a lot for experimentation on what to buy - so I will look again for smaller bolts.

I purchased both acorn nuts and some lock nuts to see which worked better. I haven't laid it on a track yet with the new screws, but here is a photo of what it looks like. (You can click on it to see a bigger version.)

As you can see I have 2 nuts before the lock nut to fill out the extra space on the bolt.

And as a PS, my previous image with the rubber bands was my FAR reaching attempt to see what would happen with them. But I soon discovered that they didn't do jack. Oh well.

ALSO: How easily should the wheels be spinning on their own? All my wheels rotate, but only some can I give a spin to and see them continue to spin a second after I let go. The others... once I let go the wheel stops immediately.
