Yes, another Letus Elite VS Micro2 Encore thread...

Before I get into this, I feel like I'm setting myself up for a whirlwind of responses that read something like this...

"Thats already been posted in hundreds of threads... why don't you look around for it first before posting yet another thread!"

Well, in the time it takes to write said unobliging response, one could point me in the right direction of the thread of which you speak.

That being said, I have read nearly all the information about these units, and I'm looking for some opinon, some fact, and mostly some help.

I have recently used the Letus 35 Elite (Approx $1,899) on a shoot with the HVX200. For the most part I was impressed with it's performance.

I have a set of Nikon SLR lenses (20mm f2.8, 35mm f2, 50mm f1.4, 85mm f2, 100 mm f2, 135mm f2.8) That worked beautifully. I found the unit to be solid, quiet, and relatively easy to setup and adjust. We stopped the letus between takes to conserve battery, and it lasted us for a full day shoot.

During capture I noticed that a few of my OUTDOOR shots had, what looked like, a dirty piece of glass in front of the lens. The GG WAS spinning, so I assumed that it was the rear glass element showing up because I had to stop down my HVX to compensate for the setting sun. (I didn't use any ND filters on my lenses. Stupid I know)

So my question is this- I am hoping to find anyone who has some input about the Letus 35 ELITE and the NEW Redrock Micro 2 ENCORE, preferrably someone who has experience with BOTH. The two units are simalarily priced. But I can't find too many spec comparisons.

I was hoping to find out about the shutter speeds of both units, the ability to stop down the CAMERA in the back if needed, or if thats just a No-no, how back focus on the Redrock M2e is in comparison to the Letus, basic set up time, unit construction, etc.

Just these two units. I'm not considering the Blade, or the Brevis, or the Cinemek. and unless you can point me to a thread or a page that will beyond the shadow of a doubt change my mind, I'm just lookin at the ELITE and the M2E.

Any help will be greatly appreciated. I'm just trying to weed out the dross inbetween for those who are having the same frustration as I am trying to choose between these two units.

Thank you so much

Cheers-
Boz

You can stop the CAMERA down as much as you want, it doesn't matter. Sharpness might be affected a bit but you won't see any GG pattern unless you stop down too much on the SLR lens.

Personally I like the Redrock products better. The initial setup takes some time but once you have it set up its the easiest to use and breakdown for transport. The Redrock team is also easy to deal with if you have issues. They usually offer upgrade paths down the line as well if they decide to upgrade their products.

I find the Letus cumbersome to setup and seems to offer less ability to tweek should you need to. Also, you usually have to buy a whole new unit when they upgrade (except for the ground glass options).

both have strengths and weaknesses. the biggest thing to consider is vibrating gg vs. spinning gg.

the letus is smaller and i think cooler looking because of the space saving, vibrating gg. however, despite it's clunky square appearance, i like the redrock better because of the spinning gg. higher shutter speeds are possible. the "dirty lens effect" is common among vibrating adapters including the mega expensive mini35. i have never seen this issue with a spinner and i have been using adapters for a long time...

Interesting, I know that my lens was stopped down all the way at f22, but the glass is pristine so I know the image distortion came from the adapter. You're saying that you can stop the camera down as much as you need and you wont get that noise as long as the lens isn't too far down?

I knew that the letus was a vibrating GG element, which is why the Redrock appealed to me. Does anyone know the Shutter speeds that each adapter is capable of? I tried looking on their sites, but the Red Rock site says 1/500 and above. No actual specs on the the letus site. Anyone have any experience with higher shutters?

I believe Redrock states that the M2e can be used all the way to 1/2000, although you have to adjust the speed of the GG.

Hi Boz,

The M2 Encore's feature set is in line with that of the Ultimate, not the Elite. A third party review even found that the Encore outperforms the Ultimate in terms of field of view, sharpness, and brightness. Hit me up at support@redrockmicro.com if you'd like to see the whitepaper.

Cheers!

how much zoom is required compared to the first gen adapter? let's say for a sony ex-1, what is the zoom # to get the proper field of view?

i know the first gen had to zoom in a lot more than a letus (mini or extreme) to get proper field of view. And when you ahve to zoom in so far, light is lost.
