Earlier this week marked my third year here with dvxuser. It's been a pretty good one. I've made a little headway with my production company I started last year, Slate 1 Productions. Most of my work has been event videography, and I still don't have enough to do it full time, but certain times of the year (like right now) I've really got my hands full with video work.
This past year I was DP on two feature films. They're both in post-production, hopefully to be applying to festivals later this year. The first was called 1978. It's a very exagerated autobiographical tale from the high school days of our first-time writer/director Mark Watkins. Shot in and around greenville, sc with xha1 and hv20 for B-roll. Here's a really early trailer: http://vimeo.com/1755600
The second film I did is tentatively titled Douglass Fromm. It's also from a first-timer, Alex Brownson. This was shot outside atlanta with 3 hv30s. Trailer: http://vimeo.com/4269182
These were both fun shoots. I learned a lot from the first, so the second went much more smoothly, but still far from perfect. We had very limited budgets and usually just home depot shop lights to work with.
What's next on the plate is a big move to LA. My girlfriend's going back to school, so she's starting at UCLA extension in a few months. I have no idea what type of work I'll be able to get when I get out there. A few of my friends have studio jobs, but they said I could probably only get on with minimum wage, and I couldn't afford to live in LA on that. I'm working part-time at Best Buy right now, so it looks like my best bet at the moment is to try for a transfer. Of course, the reason I want to move out that way is to get a production job, so staying at Best Buy isn't my favorite option.
Anyway, this site is awesome. Most of the things I've learned about video production have come right from here or from just trial and error. I'd rather LA doesn't turn out to be trial and error. Anybody got any tips or suggestions for me?
