Yay! New Equipment from EVS

I just got my new Bogen 503,351MVB2K tripod and legs plus the JVC TM-H150CGU Production monitor. I haven't even opened the monitor yet but I've been playing with the tripod and I don't know how I was using that crap I had before. Hooray:thumbsup:

I've been looking at that same bogen setup online. I know the 503 is a fluid head and the 501 is a teflon head. Is there a huge difference as far as performance. Naturally i know a fluid head out performs any friction head. However, i've herd good reports about the 501 and how smooth it is.
Also, anybody have experience with the wilderness 3221WN from bogen. I want the 351mvb2k but fear its to bulky for remote productions.

Any help?

Brad

Hi Brad, the 501 is a great head, and should suffice. However if you have twice the money and want twice the performance, invest in the 503. It makes smoother pans and better diagonals. The 3221 legs are great, but were originally made for photo applications. The 351 was made for video, and is not bulky at all. $500 for the set is a great bang for the buck. :)

Rush, do you recommend the Bogens over comparably prices Sachtlers et. al or is this one of those six of one, half-dozen of the other scenarios? People always recommend a test but it's hard to find a place that really lets you test out things like mics, tripods, and those things.

Just for the record, I've never been a fan of the 501 head-- it sticks way too often. Pop the extra cash on the 503.

One of my few somewhat regrettable purchases...

Penfever, I went with the Sachtler DV2/II despite all the praise about the bogen's. I've just never liked em. I'm not exactly thrilled with the Sachtler but I still feel like it's better than the Bogen. Like anything else, you get what you pay for. :undecided If you can make it down to B&H, they should have them both set up in the Tripod section so you can try em out.

I have a Sachtler DV-4II/2 and this thing is awesome. But like hybridcreations said "you get what you pay for", that's too bad you weren't happy with your sachtler. I know it seems like alot of money but, if your not in a rush then just save your money and get one that best suits you.

Well the real-world test is what matters most. Get your mits on one, a friend's, a local production company or TV station. Bogen out-numbers all other tripods sold 2:1, primarily due to price, but also value. Nothing else performs better for $500. If you have $1000 for a head, get a 519 or Vision 3 or Focus, but when the entire budget is half that, 503-351 is where it's at.

Thanks for the insight, Rush.

Hey

how do you like your TM-H150CGU??

Ive been comsidering that, the H1700GU, and the H1750GU

What do you think so far? also does that H150GU have blue gun?

Oneinfiniteloop and Kubrick71

I love this monitor it's great. It's got a nice screen size. It's a little heavy so I would lug it around. I'm thinking about either getting a decklink card or canopus converter to output from my computer. I could always buy a cheap camcorder to use as a deck and to push it out but I like the way the other solutions look. I don't know if the H150GU has blue gun i don't think that's the professional version. I believe if it has a C before the Gu it means it Pro, But hey what do I know i'm here learning like the rest of ya'll :-)
