after 4 months of serving ice cream full time my DVX has finally arrived!!

any advice on what kind of stuff to work on to get a good feel of the camera out of the box??

Also, how long did it take you to really get the hang of using this camera?

wow, thats admirable!

watch your credit card, it is easy to go overboard on accessories. ( yes, I need this advice too!! but I earn the investment back..)

shoot whatever you like. I think kids are great to play around with because they are fast moving targets and will give you lots of action. I like to shoot flowers when I want to test a bunch of settings. go out everyday and shoot something different and talk on camera or record the settings you used for what shots. that iwll teach you alot about the settings and what effect they have. good luck!

Re: YAY my DVX is here!!

Yea I spent an hour doing filter and setting tests one day. I had forgotten that I had done sound tests with my shotgun the day before and never turned the camera mic back on...sigh :-/

Re: YAY my DVX is here!!

Hey - I've shot an interview for a 'making of' documentary with CH1 and CH2 turned to external inputs, without an external mike! ::)

NOW you can sigh :)

Re: YAY my DVX is here!!

While we're confessing audio sins...

I shot an interview with a new Sennheiser G2 wireless system (without headphones). The level on the camera was good. However, I later discovered that the new G2 systems come from the factory set to "+12dB" so everything was distorted. If I had monitored with headphones I would've caught it.

Word of caution to new G2 owners: You have to set the receiver to at least -12dB before it begins to sound clean. So, in effect, my audio level was 24dB too hot.

Re: YAY my DVX is here!!

With all the extra settings, I think there's tens of thousands of combinations that you can experiment with. Barry's DVX book is a good place to start.

Try AAA or Farmers Insurance. :)

Yea, I have renter's insurance to cover my video gear. It's super cheap.

One accessory I would suggest is a good 72mm UV filter for lens protection. Especially for shooting around those "fast moving objects".

That $50 filter is so easy to replace when one of the kids throws a toy at you and cracks it. :embarasse
