I really want to get more out of my system, and xp's 3gb ram limit is pretty junk so what are the limiations of windows 7 with regards to RAM? And if it does support more ram, will premiere do the same or is there a limit?
It's a 32 bit OS versus 64 bit issue and not the version of windows. 64 bit can take advantage of more RAM (over simplified so excuse me). I haven't even used windows 7 but I have heard it is quite stable. Of course RAM is not the only issue influencing performance CPU and motherboard choice WILL also be very important choices. I'm hoping someone a lot more knowledgeable than myself can help you with the Premiere part of your question.
Cheers,
Sam
I have been using XP Pro x64 for years and now have moved to Windows 7 x64 Ultimate.
By using a O.S. that is 64bit, it takes advantage of the components installed.
The more RAM and CPU power in the system, the more ease of production.
Theoretically that is...rogar-BigGrin(DBG)
windows 7 64 bit hands down. ALL new versions of adobes pro video software will be 64 bit ONLY. as well, cs4 and newer versions can essentially use as much ram and processors as you have in your system by spawning mutiple background processes of the program which then act as a sort of render farm to simply feed frames to your single process that you can actually see and are working on. it all just happens in the background. .. each node of ppro or AE uses 4 GB of ram so you could have 4 instances of PPRo each running 4 gb of ram and each using one of the cores on your quad core ,, all rendering to the one node of ppro you are working on.. like having a 4 machine render farm speed up everything you are doing.
..anyway. hopefully in the future they will incorporate use of all available ram to a single instance of the program which handels mutiprocessing and large addressing or ram all internally. but either way. windows 764 BIT is the easy choice.
I've been running Win7 for months on my primary editing machine. No way I'd use anything else. I have XP64 on the cutting latptop, Vista on my work desktop, and XP32 on two other machines.
