XP Laptop AND wireless mic question...

using P2 cards for HVX200a... need a Laptop and a wireless mic setup!

QUESTION 1:

It seems it's difficult getting new Laptops loaded with XP, yet that's what we need to unload P2's. (our Vegas 8 is for XP, plus Vista sucks, etc).

Anyone have any recommendations? According to my research, only a few companies (Dell, for example) still offer the option of XP, and then, you have to specifically ask for it.

QUESTION 2:

I've always used a boom mic, but now I'll be working alone alot, and can't have someone holding the boom mic... So looking to get some lapel mics. Doing a little research, but wondering if any recommendations from here?

Surely there's something out there I plug into the XLR ports of the HVX (or DVX for that matter) that captures the signal from the lapel mics on my subjects? (who wants to add and sync audio later if you can get it the first time around?)

THANKS!

ps. the wireless mic FAQ didn't address this

A1: Check out the lenovos. Great price, and still offer XP - at least they did a few months ago when I got mine.

A2: Just get a hardwired lav mic. Audio forum has plenty of reviews and recs depending on your budget. If you are looking to go wireless with it, most if not all receivers that I'm aware of can plug in via xlr. Sennheiser g2 is a good place to start at the low end of the budget - the mic is crap though.

I have posted this link a few times, but it seems relevant here as well. Even if you go with a wireless system (the Sennheiser is still an amazing unit) you'll want a good lav, which is where the video on this page comes in. It's just a fantastic example of what a good lav can do. No post production 'sweetening" in this, and the one lav is micing girl and guitar

okay...

okay...

Is this the sort of mic setup you were talking about?

I've always used a boom mic with XLR cable attached to the DVX (now HVX). In the pic above, how many mics are there? 1 mic? Is the other pac to recieve the signal? I see 1 device with an XLR port, put it's a female port, and the DVX/HVX also have female ports. Not sure how they would interface. Does the 'receiver pack' (if that's what it is) connect to the XLR device?
I was hoping it would be some sort of easy, lite-weight single thing that "stuck" right to the camera XLR port and could be left alone to receive from the mic and send the audio right onto the mini-DVtape/P2card/Firestore. (I hate having to tape and attach extra stuff)

As for an XP laptop, no one apparently offers it on their sites; I guess I'm going to have to call them all and try to get through and find out who actually still offers XP.

Get a Macbook Pro? You can run XP on a mac if you really want to, and with a Dual Adapter you can capture P2s.

Actually just yesterday a dude told me his mac laptop's battery is weaker than his previous laptop, and someone else agreed and said they had the same problem with their mac laptop...
...and since I'll be taking the laptop on location to unload the P2's, battery life would be crucial.
