XLR to miniDV adapter ? (help)

I think I need to buy a Rode NTG-2 shotgun mic, something better than the piece of junk $50 shotgun miniDV cable mic I bought. For Canon HF100 camcorder. My question: to attach the XLR cable to my little HF100, do I need the $200 BeachTek DXA-2s adapter box, or could I get buy with the $18 XLR-to-miniDV simple adapter shown here:
http://secure.netsolhost.com/517570...NAOFV&Product_Code=XLRDV&Category_Code=CAMSND
What added benefit would the more expensive Beachtek adapter box give me assuming I am just using one single shotgun mic on a boom pole and using the in-camera gain control?

I need help on this fast, I want to order something tomorror to get it in time for making my first short in a couple of weeks. Any tips appreciated.

Since the NTG-2 has an internal battery for power that adapter would work but you're giving up a lot of flexibility by not going with something more 'mixer'ish.' I've got a Juicedlink preamp/adapter that works very well and would recommend you consider if your budget will allow it.

I am actually convinced the Juicedlink is better. Problem is it is out of stock :( so I might have to buy the beachtek just so i can have it in time for making my short. Or i could go with the $18 adapter to buy time until i could get the juicedlink?

My other option to buy time is this: I just ordered the Rode NTG-2 shotgun mic (I have owned it before, not a bad mic); I own a ZOOM H4 digital recorder, and it has preamp, XLR inputs. So while waiting to get a juicedlink I suppose I could record somewhat like a Nagra right, record audio separate to my ZOOM H4 recorder, then add it in during post? I have a clapboard which I would surely have to use to sync it all up later correct?

I just ordered the Beachtek, I just can not wait on the juicedlink. And I called Juicedlink, won't have more until another week, and even that seemed a bit sketchy. I need the Rode NTG2 and Beachtek asap so I can play with the equipment, learn it, and start filming in a couple of weeks. Gotta film when the leaves turn, and that is starting now up here in northern MN, below freezing temps now at night.
