Audiopile sells XLR-female to XLR-male adapters pre-wired as phase reversers for the remarkable price of $3.25 each. (I have no connection with this vendor.)

At that price there's no good excuse not to have a couple of those around just wired for phase reverse as delivered. But it is also a great price for XLR-F to XLR-M to use for other things like pads.
Audio pads are used to decrease signal levels in cases where the source is too much for the destination to handle. IME it is good to have 15dB and 30dB (or 20dB and 40dB) pads handy.
Rick Chinn's website has an excelent page on DIY pads, from discussing various kinds of pads and how to select the type, to formulae for calculating the resistor values. And even photos showing how to wire the resistors onto the back of the XLR connectors for DIY pads. http://www.uneeda-audio.com/pads/ Recommended.
